President Donald Trump announced Friday he is endorsing both Republicans competing in South Carolina’s June 23 gubernatorial runoff — dealing a blow to Lt. Gov. Pam Evette, whom he’d already backed before the primary.
Trump said he couldn’t choose between the two “highly respected” candidates: Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson.
The president endorsed Evette ahead of the June 9 primary, which narrowed a crowded field. But in a Friday Truth Social post, he hedged his bet — declaring a vote for either Republican would be a win for the state.
“You can’t go wrong. Vote for Pam or Alan — They will not let you down!”
“I love the Wonderful State of South Carolina for every reason in the book, including the fact that it is ‘loaded up’ with truly GREAT people and Political Leaders,” Trump wrote.
The dual endorsement undercuts Evette’s previous advantage of being Trump’s sole pick in the race. Wilson and Evette now head into the runoff on equal footing in terms of the president’s backing.
The winner will face the Democratic nominee in the November general election.
