In a heartbreaking incident that has rocked the Las Cruces community, a shooting at Young Park has resulted in the tragic loss of three young lives, with 15 others injured. This senseless act of violence occurred during an unsanctioned car show, attracting a crowd of about 200 attendees on what was supposed to be a night of excitement and camaraderie.
The perpetrators of this violence have been apprehended by the swift action of law enforcement. Among those arrested are four individuals: 20-year-old Tomas Rivas, two 17-year-old boys, and a 15-year-old boy. They are now facing serious charges, including three open counts of murder.
The victims who tragically lost their lives in this calamity have been identified as:
- Andrew Madrid, 16
- Jason Gomez, 18
- Dominick Estrada, 19
Andrew and Jason were declared dead at the scene, while Dominick succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The injured victims, aged between 16 and 36, consist of nine males and six females. In respect of their privacy, their names have not been disclosed.
The confrontation stemmed from an altercation between two groups with lingering disputes, escalating into a deadly gun battle. Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident, with help from several agencies, including the FBI and ATF.
On Saturday evening, police arrested Tomas Rivas, 20, and a 17-year-old boy. Both are charged with three open counts of murder. Additional charges are pending.
Rivas is currently being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. The juvenile suspects are detained in a juvenile facility, as the investigation presses on.
