The #MeToo movement has brought a whirlwind of change, and now, France finds itself at a crossroads as legendary actor Gérard Depardieu faces serious allegations. With over 20 women accusing him of rape and sexual assault, Depardieu stands trial in Paris, confronting the long-standing French ‘laissez faire’ attitude towards the misdeeds of the rich and famous.
The Associated Press reports that 76-year-old Depardieu is accused of assaulting two women during the 2021 filming of ‘Les Volets Verts’ (‘The Green Shutters’). This trial tests whether France will hold this cultural icon accountable.
Prosecutors claim Depardieu trapped one of the women with his legs before groping her, in full view of witnesses. The set dresser shared her ordeal with Mediapart, describing Depardieu’s inappropriate remarks and actions, which required intervention by bodyguards.
The assistant director also accused Depardieu of groping her on set and in public. For privacy and protection, the plaintiffs’ names remain undisclosed.
Depardieu has vehemently denied these allegations. In an open letter in Le Figaro, he declared, “Never, but never, have I abused a woman.” He further explained his strong temperament might be perceived as overbearing, but he emphasized his innocence.
Despite recent health challenges, including a quadruple bypass and diabetes, Depardieu will attend the two-day trial, with necessary breaks for his condition.
Meanwhile, another controversial figure, Roman Polanski, continues to thrive in France, despite his conviction in the U.S. for unlawful sex with a minor and additional accusations. His 2020 César Award win sparked protests, with several women, including Adèle Haenel, walking out in protest.
Respected actress Anouk Grinberg, who starred alongside Depardieu, has voiced her support for the plaintiffs, denouncing his behavior as ‘vulgar and disturbing’.
The trial comes while Depardieu is still under investigation for another alleged rape in 2018, and calls for this to go to trial have been made by prosecutors.
