Socialists Abandon Anti-Trump Strategy, Attack Democrats Instead

The Democratic Socialists of America just swept a slate of New York primary victories — and their winning formula had nothing to do with Trump.

While national Democratic leaders poured midterm messaging into stopping President Donald Trump and retaking Congress, socialist candidates took a completely different path. They aimed their fire at establishment Democrats instead.

A review of campaign websites, interviews, and messaging from DSA-backed winners shows the pattern clearly. Housing affordability, healthcare, opposition to Israel, labor rights, and donor influence dominated their platforms.

Criticism targeted Democratic incumbents’ failures — not Republican policies.

The socialist victories raise new questions about whether progressive politics is finding a broader audience within the Democratic Party.

The strategy marks a sharp break from the Trump-obsessed messaging that has defined Democratic campaigns since 2016. Socialist candidates in New York proved voters respond to kitchen-table issues and anti-establishment energy — even when that establishment wears a blue jersey.

The DSA’s approach could signal trouble for moderate Democrats heading into future primaries. When the far left stops fighting Republicans and starts fighting you, the party’s internal fault lines become impossible to ignore.
