In a significant law enforcement operation, a man wanted for murder was apprehended in Washington, D.C.’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood after being stopped for an open container violation. Jose Ramos, 38, had been evading authorities for three weeks in connection to the January 2022 murder of his neighbor, according to court records cited by NBC4 Washington.
Ramos was initially taken into custody but was released on electronic monitoring in 2023. A subsequent warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to appear at a court hearing last month. Officers from President Donald Trump’s D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force detained Ramos on May 26 for allegedly possessing an open beer.
“PUT DOWN THE BAT! PUT DOWN THE BAT NOW!” AN OFFICER CAN BE HEARD YELLING.
The arrest, which took place at Lamont Plaza, was captured in a video shared on social media. The footage shows local residents expressing their discontent with the officers’ presence. A tense moment ensued when a woman, allegedly holding a baseball bat, approached the officers, prompting them to draw their weapons.
“YOU’RE THREATENING OUR NEIGHBORS!” A WOMAN’S VOICE SHOUTS, ACCORDING TO THE FOOTAGE.
Despite the heated situation, no injuries were reported, and the individual with the bat was not taken into custody. Ramos reportedly attempted to conceal his identity by providing a false name but was identified through fingerprinting. He remains detained without bond pending his next court appearance.
No Metropolitan Police Department officers were involved in the arrest. The operation reflects the impact of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, established by President Trump in March 2025, which has contributed to a significant reduction in crime. A Department of Justice report highlights a 50% decrease in homicides and a 25% drop in overall crime in the area for 2026.
