Marius Borg Hoiby, the 29-year-old son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was sentenced Monday to four years in prison after being convicted on rape charges in a case that has gripped the European royal family.
Hoiby was found guilty in March on two counts of rape involving women who were asleep or otherwise unable to resist during incidents spanning 2018 to 2024. He was acquitted on two other rape charges and had denied all allegations.
The 29-year-old faced a total of 40 criminal charges, including assault, drug-related crimes, and violations of a restraining order.
Judge Jon Sverdrup Efjestad also convicted Hoiby of domestic violence against his former girlfriend, Nora Haukland. During the trial, the court heard evidence that he repeatedly punched her in the face, choked her, slammed a door into her face, and threw objects at her.
Hoiby heard the verdict via video link from prison due to health issues. Prosecutors had sought a prison sentence of over seven years from the Oslo District Court.

Hoiby does not hold an official royal title. He is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a relationship prior to her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to Norway’s throne.
Mette-Marit suffers from pulmonary fibrosis and is currently awaiting a lung transplant.
