In a bold move, Minnesota Senate Republicans have put forth legislation to officially classify “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS) as a mental illness. This proposed change in state law seeks to give a name to the fervent hysteria observed among leftists ever since Donald Trump declared his candidacy back in 2015.
The champions of this bill, Republican Senators Eric Lucero, Steve Drazkowski, Walter Hudson, Justin Eichorn, and Glenn Gruenhagen, are committed to acknowledging the palpable tension and emotional frenzy that Trump’s leadership has stirred on the left.
The proposed bill, identified as SF 2589, has been introduced in the Minnesota Senate and referred to the Health and Human Services Committee. It aims to amend current mental health statutes to define TDS as:
“‘acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal persons’ triggered by reactions to Donald J. Trump’s policies and presidency, characterized by symptoms such as intense verbal hostility toward Trump and potential acts of aggression against Trump supporters.”
This definition implies that TDS leads to an inability to differentiate legitimate policy disagreements from what the bill refers to as “psychic pathology” in Trump’s behavior. It suggests incorporating this language into existing legal definitions of mental illness, allowing TDS to be recognized as a clinically diagnosable condition.
Though the bill may seem satirical or politically charged, it seeks to formally embed this concept in Minnesota’s mental health statutes, which could pave the way for clinical acknowledgment or treatment of what it describes as a syndrome linked to emotional reactions to political figures.
With instances of radical left-wing activists confronting Trump supporters, vandalizing campaign offices, and even manipulating law enforcement against the president and his supporters, Republicans argue it’s high time to acknowledge this phenomenon as a legitimate mental health issue.
Regardless of whether S.F. No. 2589 becomes law, the existence of Trump Derangement Syndrome is undeniable. Millions of leftists appear to be affected, but the pressing question remains—can they be rehabilitated?
