New York Knicks owner James Dolan delivered a pointed message to Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Thursday’s NBA championship celebration at City Hall — and it wasn’t subtle.
The awkward stage moment capped weeks of tension between the two over watch parties during the Knicks’ championship run. Dolan had publicly questioned whether Mamdani was a real Knicks fan, setting the tone for what became a petty showdown.
Mamdani spoke first, delivering an eight-minute speech packed with Knicks history, iconic moments, and player names — including Charles Oakley, whom Dolan famously banned from Madison Square Garden in 2017 following a public feud.

The mayor highlighted the team’s 53-year championship drought, the heartbreak campaigns, and the perseverance required to finally deliver a title to New York.
When Dolan took the mic, he kept it brief.
“I don’t need your vote. I don’t need to quote to you what happened. If you’re real Knick fans, you know it already.”

The tension didn’t end with the speeches. During the photo op where Mamdani handed out keys to the city, Dolan and his son appeared visibly annoyed, according to Fox News. The two exchanged handshakes with the mayor but reportedly snubbed the ceremonial photo moment.

The feud began during the Knicks’ playoff run when the mayor and team owner clashed over watch party arrangements. Dolan’s swipe at Mamdani’s fandom during an interview fueled the fire heading into Thursday’s City Hall event.
