Support for sex changes has collapsed among Democrats, dropping 11 percentage points in just one year, according to a new Gallup poll released Tuesday.
Overall American acceptance of changing one’s gender hit an all-time low.
The poll found 38% of Americans now think changing one’s gender is morally acceptable, while 57% say it is morally wrong. Among Democrats, 60% still support sex changes — but that’s down sharply from previous years. Only 5% of Republicans view gender changes as acceptable, creating a 55-point partisan gap.

Independents split down the middle, with 42% calling sex changes morally acceptable.
The shift represents a dramatic reversal from 2021, when 46% of Americans found changing genders morally acceptable — the first time Gallup asked the question. Support has fallen eight points in five years.

The cultural shift is forcing Democratic candidates to flip positions. Texas Democratic senate nominee James Talarico now says he opposes gender reassignment surgeries for minors — after calling such surgeries “life-saving health care” three years ago.
Talarico said in 2023: “I love- I’m just going to say this because it’s on my mind- the trans children who showed up yesterday at the state Capitol to advocate for their humanity.”
Broader LGBTQ acceptance is also declining. 62% of Americans now view gay and lesbian relations as morally acceptable, with 81% of Democrats and 35% of Republicans supporting same-sex relationships. Same-sex marriage sits at 64% moral acceptance nationwide.
Gallup conducted the poll May 1-17 via telephone interviews with 1,001 adults across all 50 states and D.C. The margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.
