Rep. Nicole Malliotakis is demanding Attorney General Todd Blanche shut down two Biden-funded heroin injection sites in Manhattan — and she’s got the receipts to prove they’re breaking federal law.
The New York Republican fired off a letter Tuesday calling for immediate action against OnPoint’s Overdose Prevention Centers in East Harlem and Washington Heights, where drug users openly shoot up heroin under the guise of “supervised consumption.”
“People literally go there like it’s a community center, hang out, and shoot up drugs. It’s signaling to drug dealers where their clients are located and attracting a criminal element in and around the facility.”
Malliotakis told Fox News Digital the sites violate federal statute 21 U.S.C. § 856, which makes it unlawful to knowingly maintain any place for the purpose of using controlled substances. Heroin is a Schedule I drug — the highest classification for substances with no accepted medical use.
“We don’t want to see this spread throughout the City of New York or the rest of the country, which is why it’s critical for the Department of Justice to step in now,” she said. “Make an example of what’s taking place in New York City so other municipalities throughout the country don’t think about opening them.”
The DOJ confirmed receipt of the letter and said the department is reviewing it carefully.
President Trump already moved to choke off the money. His administration issued an executive order in July 2025 directing HHS and HUD to redirect all federal funding away from recipients operating drug injection sites or distributing drug paraphernalia.
That executive order canceled a $2 million grant Joe Biden’s administration had approved for the OnPoint facilities.
“Thankfully, President Trump last year signed an executive order prohibiting any federal funds from going to such facilities,” Malliotakis said. “President Trump’s executive order canceled that.”
But she’s not stopping there. Malliotakis introduced legislation in 2025 to permanently defund injection centers nationwide and codify the ban in statute.
“We don’t know who will be president in a few years, so we need that codified in statute,” she told Fox News Digital. “I’m very pleased to see the President took action via executive order to stop $2 million of taxpayer money from going to a heroin shooting gallery, which is an absolutely insane use of taxpayer funds.”
Malliotakis slammed the sites for enabling addiction instead of offering real treatment — all within view of schoolchildren attending nearby community schools.
“It is really unsavory activity that’s taking place. You see the quality of life deteriorate, all in full view of the school children attending surrounding community schools,” she said.
“These are people addicted to these substances, and instead of helping them fight their addiction and get off drugs, they’re literally enabling them and giving them a community center to do it in — when we could use community centers for our youth and our seniors.”
She also torched New York’s Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who visited one of the OnPoint locations in March and praised the work being done there.
“The new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, did go visit one of these facilities and was praising the work they’re doing, which is ludicrous,” Malliotakis said. “It’s enabling drug addiction instead of helping people who are clearly addicted.”
Malliotakis argued the city should be investing in long-term treatment instead of creating taxpayer-funded hangout spots for drug users. She criticized New York City’s revolving-door approach to drug-related arrests, where dealers and users cycle in and out with little consequence.
“We need long-term treatment. I’ve been a constant supporter of funding long-term treatment,” she said. “Unfortunately, here in New York City, when they make a drug-related arrest, it’s a quick turnaround — you’re in and you’re out, even if you’re the dealer perpetrating these crimes on people.”
The Trump DOJ now has the letter — and the legal ammunition to shut the sites down for good.
