President Donald Trump joined Spanish players onstage during the World Cup 2026 trophy ceremony after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final Sunday, bringing the global sporting event held throughout the summer in the United States to a close.

The ceremony at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey featured Trump alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, handing medals to the Spanish squad and presenting the iconic trophy to captain Rodrigo Hernandez.
Spanish striker Ferran Torres scored the game’s lone goal in extra time not long after Argentina defender Enzo Fernandez received a red card.
Other political figures in attendance included Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose countries cohosted the tournament alongside the United States.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, with whom Trump has publicly feuded over disagreements on the Iran conflict and NATO defense spending, was also in attendance. The two world leaders briefly shook hands.
Trump’s presence onstage as Spanish captain Rodrigo Hernandez hoisted the trophy in the air marked the final moment of the monthslong tournament.
While speaking to reporters after the event, Trump said the World Cup was historic.
“There’s never been anything like it,” Trump told reporters.
The 2026 World Cup marked the first time the tournament was hosted across three nations, with matches held in cities throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada over the course of the summer.
