White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt showed her prowess by firmly responding to a reporter’s question regarding President Trump’s tariff strategies. During the briefing, a reporter, seemingly perplexed by Trump’s approach, asked, “Why would any of our allies work with us to isolate China in a trade war if we’re treating friend and foe alike?”

Leavitt, with confidence, replied, “You’ll have to talk to our allies who are reaching out to us. The phones are ringing off the hooks. They’ve made it very clear they need the United States of America. They need our markets. They need our consumer base.”

On Tuesday, China retaliated to Trump’s original 104% tariff by hiking tariffs on American products from 34% to 84%. In a decisive move, President Trump announced a further increase in tariffs on China to 125% on Wednesday. Trump made it clear that the United States will continue to stand firm.

Trump declared a 90-day pause on tariffs while reducing reciprocal tariffs for over 75 countries, effectively turning the global economic landscape against China. His statement on Truth Social emphasized America’s resolve:

“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, are no longer sustainable or acceptable. Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non-Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90-day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The financial markets responded with a strong rally. The Dow Jones surged over 2,800 points and the Nasdaq soared by more than 10% on Wednesday afternoon.

Citing CNBC, “The S&P 500 skyrocketed 9.1%, on pace for its biggest one-day gain in five years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 2,861 points, or 7.4%, also its biggest advance since 2020. The Nasdaq Composite jumped 11.7%, its largest one-day jump in decades.”
