Tom Homan, the Trump-Vance administration’s incoming border czar, stunned CNN anchor Kasie Hunt into eye-popping silence on Wednesday after issuing a fiery threat to the mayor of Denver, a progressive Democrat who has promised to meddle with his ability to apprehend illegal immigrants.
On Monday the future head of U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement appeared on Fox News where he responded to Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s promise to refuse all requests for assistance from local authorities in detaining migrants suspected of criminal activity. Johnston previous drew national headlines for suggesting he would like to see city police line the perimeter of Denver and prevent federal immigration authorities from entering, an action he likened to Tiananmen Square, the Guardian reported. He later withdrew those comments, but not quickly enough for Homan, who told Fox that the Democrat was guilty of encouraging felonious activity.

“What it says is that it’s a felony if you knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien from immigration authorities. It’s also a felony to impede a federal law enforcement officer,” Homan told Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “So if he don’t help, that’s fine. He can get the hell out of the way, but we’re going to go do the job,” he said, before adding: “I find it hard to believe that any mayor or governor would say they don’t want public safety threats removed from their neighborhoods.
“Me and the Denver mayor, we agree on one thing: he’s willing to go to jail. I’m willing to put him in jail.”
“Oof,” Hunt reacted in a clip that has since gone viral.

Johnston is not the first progressive mayor to publicly posture up against Homan, a veteran of the first Trump administration’s ICE personnel. Earlier this month, Boston’s Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu was put on the defense after promising to deny federal authorities access to city resources while conducting raids to locate and arrest violent criminals. A 2014 city statute prevents cooperation with federal authorities on civil immigration matters, but not criminal ones, the Boston Herald reported. Homan said it’s Wu’s responsibility to “helps us or gets the hell out of the way.” In response, Wu told a local TV station “we are not cooperating with those efforts that actually threaten the safety of everyone by causing widespread fear and having large-scale economic impact.”
President-elect Donald Trump has suggested he is open to defunding sanctuary cities like Boston and Denver, an approach Homan says he is fully behind. “That’s going to happen, I guarantee you,” he told conservative Fox News host Mark Levin previously.
