U.S. Central Command announced Wednesday that American forces killed a senior ISIS leader in a precision airstrike in northwest Syria last week.

The June 19 strike eliminated Ali Husayn al-‘Ulaywi, a top figure in the terrorist organization.

“The precision strike killed Ali Husayn al-‘Ulaywi and is part of ongoing U.S. efforts to disrupt and eliminate terrorists seeking to attack Americans abroad or the U.S. homeland.”

CENTCOM forces carried out the operation as part of continued efforts to degrade ISIS capabilities in the region.

The command said U.S. forces continue working alongside regional partners to target terrorists planning attacks against Americans.

No additional details about the operation or al-‘Ulaywi’s specific role within ISIS were immediately released.
