President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he had secured the release of American citizen Robert Gilman, a former U.S. Marine imprisoned in Russia since 2022 — and Russia asked for no one in return.
The announcement marks a major diplomatic victory for the Trump administration, which has made bringing home Americans detained abroad a central priority. Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly emphasized that securing the freedom of wrongfully detained Americans would be among his administration’s highest foreign policy objectives, a commitment that appears to be bearing fruit with Gilman’s release.
The case of Americans detained in Russia has become an increasingly sensitive diplomatic issue over the past several years, testing the limits of U.S.-Russia relations during a period of heightened tensions. Gilman’s imprisonment since 2022 placed him among a small but troubling number of American citizens held by Moscow, often on charges that U.S. officials and family members have disputed as politically motivated or exaggerated.
No exchange took place.

Trump posted the news on Truth Social, revealing that Russia agreed to release Gilman “very much on a Humanitarian Basis” after discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We appreciate this decision, and the fact that Russia asked for no one in return — No exchange took place,” Trump wrote.
The absence of a prisoner exchange in this case represents a significant departure from recent precedent in U.S.-Russia negotiations over detained Americans. Such releases typically involve complex diplomatic bargaining, with Moscow demanding the return of Russian nationals held in the United States or other Western countries, often individuals convicted of serious crimes including espionage, arms trafficking, or cybercrime.
The contrast with the Biden administration’s approach is stark. President Joe Biden returned convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout — known as the “Merchant of Death” — to Russia in exchange for WNBA player Brittney Griner.
That December 2022 exchange drew criticism from those who argued that trading a notorious international arms dealer for an American basketball player, while bringing Griner home, set a dangerous precedent by incentivizing adversaries to detain Americans as bargaining chips. The Bout trade illustrated the difficult calculations previous administrations have faced when attempting to secure the freedom of detained citizens.
Russia has imprisoned many American citizens in recent years, typically releasing them only in exchange for Russians held in U.S. custody. Trump’s team secured Gilman’s freedom without giving up a single person.
This pattern of detentions has created a recurring challenge for American diplomats, who must balance the imperative to bring citizens home against the risk of emboldening foreign governments to use Americans as leverage in unrelated disputes or to secure the release of their own operatives and criminals from Western prisons.
Gilman landed at Andrews Air Force Base Tuesday night, where Trump’s representatives — some of whom traveled on the plane with him — welcomed him home.
Trump spoke to Gilman before his arrival. The former Marine had one request: a great cheeseburger.
“I will take care of that!” Trump promised.
The lighthearted exchange highlighted the human dimension of what had been a prolonged diplomatic effort, offering a glimpse of Gilman’s state of mind after his extended detention and suggesting he maintained his spirits despite the ordeal.
Trump credited his team for the breakthrough, naming Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for Hostage Response Adam Boehler, Senior Director for Counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka, Jared Kushner, and others.
The involvement of multiple senior administration officials in Gilman’s case reflects the priority Trump has placed on these matters, assembling a specialized team to handle the delicate negotiations required to navigate complex international detention cases.
“During my Administration, we have prioritized bringing home Americans Detained Abroad, and have done so at a level never seen before, returning hundreds of people to their families,” Trump said.
Gilman was reunited with his mother, Nancy, who was also on the plane. He will soon see all his loved ones.
The presence of family members during the journey home is often arranged to provide immediate emotional support to returning detainees, who may face significant adjustment challenges after prolonged imprisonment in foreign facilities.
“We have also freed many non Americans who were under capture in different countries throughout the World,” Trump added.
The release underscores Trump’s ability to negotiate with adversaries and deliver results without capitulating. Unlike the Biden-era prisoner swaps that sent dangerous criminals back to hostile regimes, Trump brought an American home — and gave up nothing.
