Trump Iran Deal Leaves 78% of Americans Wanting War Over

78% of Americans want the war with Iran to end now, according to a new CBS News poll — while just 22% said it should continue “until Iran gives up more.”

The numbers reveal deep frustration across the political spectrum after President Donald Trump’s memorandum of understanding with Tehran.

The U.S. and Israel are mad at each other. Trump supporters who backed the decision to go to war are mad at him over the peace deal. Trump’s critics are happy the war might end but mad at Trump for starting it.

69% SAID THE WAR WAS NOT WORTH THE COSTS TO THE U.S.

What began as a military campaign with four stated goals — prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, destroy its ballistic missiles, sink its navy, and end its ability to arm proxies — ended as a desperate effort to re-open the Strait of Hormuz and limit damage to the global economy.

Despite making great progress toward those original goals, the final memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran focused almost entirely on the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. blockade.

That narrow outcome might explain why 69% of those surveyed said the war was not worth the costs to the U.S., while just 31% said it was.

When things go wrong and frustration mounts, people start pointing fingers at each other — even if they are ostensibly on the same side. Bad feelings spread.

That’s where things are now.
