Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning, leading the No. 1 team in college football, made headlines after sidestepping an attempt by a left-leaning sports media member to provoke commentary on Donald Trump’s recent election victory. The question, intended to draw Lanning into political controversy, instead saw the coach reaffirm his commitment to the team’s work ethic, pride in the country, and optimism for the future.
In a press conference, Lanning was asked about any potential political discussions within the locker room after last Tuesday’s election results, where Trump defeated Kamala Harris. Instead of indulging in speculation or political commentary, Lanning stressed the hard work and unity of his players.
“I believe it was last year you spoke out about gun violence. There was a decision made in this country that I’m sure affects a lot of the players in your locker room as well as the women in your life and the women on your staff. What was sort of the temperature in the locker room or with your team as a whole after the results were in?” the reporter asked.
“Yeah, our guys just work,” Lanning said. “They just work. So obviously gun violence is something I’ve been passionate about, but our guys just line up and go to work every single day.” Lanning continued, asserting his appreciation for the country. “I’m glad to be in the country that we’re in, certainly proud to be an American and excited about the future of this country,” he said. “But I’m not one to hop into politics.”

Oregon’s journey this season has been marked by determination and discipline, qualities Lanning instills in his team and that fans have come to appreciate. The Ducks’ success speaks for itself, but Lanning’s ability to deflect attempts to politicize his press conference may win him as much respect off the field as he’s earned on it.
As the Ducks continue their push for a national title with their fourth consecutive week atop the polls, Oregon has clearly been firing on all cylinders.
