Mitch McConnell Breaks 28-Day Silence With Hospital Photo

Senator Mitch McConnell finally broke his 28-day silence with a photo from his hospital bed and an explanation for his monthlong absence: pneumonia.

The former Senate Majority Leader has been hospitalized since June 14.

Despite the extended stay, McConnell told Kentuckians he plans to return to finish his term.

“I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do.”

McConnell said he’s been working closely with his legislative staff from the hospital, getting briefed on Senate business as needed.

The longer McConnell stayed out of sight, the more rumors swirled about his condition.

After colleagues issued statements about their conversations with McConnell, a joke emerged on social media: people claiming to have spoken to him and describing outlandish conversations.

Rep. Thomas Massie wrote last week that McConnell supposedly told him, “We should end the war with Iran, quit giving aid to Israel, stop spying on Americans without a warrant, and he’s really sorry about how my primary turned out.”

McConnell’s own statements contradict the satire. He told Americans in April he fully supported President Trump’s military actions in Iran.

“They’ve been at war with us for 47 years. They’ve killed Americans, they’ve killed Israelis, they’ve killed throughout the region, our Sunni Muslim allies … they are bad guys.”

McConnell said his doctors told him recovery will take time.

“As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time. And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet,” he said.

The Kentucky senator revealed he’s recovering from an initial fall that left him briefly unconscious. During his hospital stay, he contracted what he described as a mild case of pneumonia.

McConnell gave a full status update: no broken bones, no stroke, no heart attack, no tumors, no hemorrhages.

His wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, appeared in the photo next to him, smiling. Chao had been in China just days earlier, where she said her husband’s condition didn’t require her to return early.

Emergency dispatch calls from the day of his hospitalization mentioned “cardiac arrest” and “CPR,” according to released recordings.
