First Lady Melania Trump called on governors Wednesday to support foster children — revealing only 23 states have signed on to her Fostering the Future initiative.
The program helps foster youth build savings and invest for financial independence. But 27 states have yet to pledge support — leaving vulnerable children without access.
“Foster children are in all 50 states, but only 23 Governors have pledged to create Fostering the Future Accounts. These accounts help foster youth save and invest, paving the way for financial independence. It’s crucial that our Governors protect these vulnerable children, ensuring they have the chance for a secure future. Contact your Governor today and urge them to support Fostering the Future Accounts. Act now.”
Melania Trump launched Fostering the Future on November 13, 2025. The accounts give foster children tools to save and invest — setting them up for long-term stability.
The first lady shared a letter Wednesday urging holdout governors to join the 23 states already committed. She emphasized the program’s potential to expand educational opportunities and promote development for kids in the foster system.
“Twenty-three governors have already pledged to open accounts in their states before last week’s announcement from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Please join them so that we can make Fostering the Future Accounts available in all 50 states across our great union. Your support in this important effort will improve the lives of many foster children, and I hope I can count on you to help bring Fostering the Future Accounts to your state.”
The Treasury Department announced support for the initiative last week — giving states federal backing to establish the accounts.
