Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Tershawn Wharton is being hailed as a hero after he quickly grabbed a small child who fell headfirst from the Bank of America Stadium stands following the Chiefs’ 30-27 win against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte on Sunday.
After the game, Wharton and a handful of his teammates came over to greet a contingent of Chiefs fans who travelled to North Carolina for the road game. Just before the players reached the fans, a small child fell headfirst from the stands as he was reaching to greet the players.

Wharton immediately grabbed him, preventing serious injury as the seats are located about 10 feet above a hard concrete surface. He then lifted the young fan back into the stands, drawing cheers from onlookers.
It is not clear from the video whether a railing gave way, or whether the area that the child was leaning over was not covered by a fence.

Wharton reflected on the incident while speaking with ESPN’s Pat McAfee on Tuesday.
“I would say it’s natural reaction. I heard my name a little bit and when I heard my name, I seen him coming down. I just had to kind of like push him into the stands a little bit to make sure he didn’t hit too hard,” he said.
“I kind of grabbed him right by the back of his back and kind of like pushed him into the stands a little bit more,” the Chiefs defensive lineman added.
Wharton told McAfee that he hasn’t had a chance to meet the young fan, but he hopes to do so in the near future. “I haven’t, but I would like to reach out to him, get him to a game, be able to reflect with him a little more, if I could,” he said.
Wharton, 26, is currently in the middle of his fifth season with the NFL’s preeminent dynasty. He signed with the team in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri S&T.
