FBI Targets Susan Collins in Biden-Era Probe — No Republican Too Moderate for Lawfare

Sen. Susan Collins earned her reputation as one of the most bipartisan Republicans in the Senate. She works across the aisle, votes carefully, and represents a blue state. Over her decades in office, she has built a track record of moderation and independence that has distinguished her from more partisan colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

Collins’ team rejected the claims and confirmed the FBI stated suggestions of wrongdoing by the senator or her staff are “totally false.”

The Collins campaign cooperated fully with the FBI throughout the investigation, producing all of the documents it requested and serving as fact witnesses in official settings. In response to the allegations, the FBI clearly stated that a suggestion of wrongdoing by Senator Collins or her staff is ‘totally false.'”

The statement makes clear that Collins’ team complied with every request during the investigation, ultimately leading to the FBI’s own determination that the suggestions were baseless. Despite this exoneration by the very agency that conducted the probe, the outlet chose to proceed with publication anyway.

The outlet behind the story is a verified left-wing propaganda operation bankrolled by the left’s dark money network. The organization has won Pulitzers for dishonest hit jobs against conservative Supreme Court justices and red states’ pro-life laws. Its funding sources and editorial approach have long raised questions about its commitment to balanced journalism versus ideological agenda-setting.

The timing is suspect — the story dropped amid Collins’ tough reelection fight. Publishing such allegations during a competitive campaign season, especially when they have already been investigated and dismissed by federal authorities, raises serious questions about motivation and editorial judgment. One of the two FBI agents named in the probe was recently exposed for attempting lawfare against Elon Musk. The other was involved in the Biden DOJ’s lawfare against Trump. These connections paint a troubling picture of a pattern of politically motivated investigations targeting figures the left opposes.

But the bigger story is what this reveals about the left’s weaponized government: there are no Republicans safe from leftist bureaucrats — no matter how moderate. This case demonstrates that even senators who regularly cooperate with Democrats and take positions opposed by conservative Republicans cannot escape being targeted when it serves a political purpose.

The Biden administration’s special counsel team seized phone records of GOP members of Congress as part of its probe. The Biden DOJ targeted 2020 election protestors, pro-lifers, Christians, and parents protesting unscientific Covid policies at school board meetings. This aggressive use of federal investigative powers against political opponents and ordinary citizens represents a departure from traditional norms of prosecutorial restraint and has raised alarm among civil libertarians across the political spectrum.

Collins doesn’t fit the mold of a conservative. The Maine senator is one of the more bipartisan members of Congress. She takes a middle-of-the-road approach and carefully weighs her votes on major nominations and bills. Her voting record includes support for Democratic priorities in numerous instances, earning her criticism from conservative activists who view her as insufficiently loyal to Republican positions. To call her “MAGA” misses the mark completely.

And yet, none of that stopped the FBI from making her a target in one of its expansive investigations. Her history of collaboration with Democrats, her careful consideration of nominees from both parties, and her willingness to break with Republican leadership on key votes provided no immunity from being swept up in a federal probe.

The left’s lawfare enterprise does not care how moderate a Republican is. If that official disrupts their quest for power, leftists will not hesitate to make them the victim of their next fishing expedition. The Collins case serves as a stark warning: cooperation and moderation offer no protection when political operatives decide to weaponize the justice system against their opponents, regardless of party affiliation or ideological positioning.
