New York City authorities are now investigating a video that has ripped across TikTok and X since it was posted on August 11 — showing a Dunkin’ employee at the Staten Island Ferry terminal location standing on what appears to be a prayer rug, actively washing his feet in the establishment’s sink, feet away from where customers order food.
What the Video Shows
A customer at the Staten Island Ferry Dunkin’ pulled out a phone, hit record, and captured the exact moment a food-service worker was rubbing his hands over his own feet in the kitchen sink. The video was posted to TikTok on August 11 and immediately went viral, jumping to X, Instagram, and Facebook within hours.
To some viewers, the worker appeared to be performing wudu — an Islamic purification ritual involving washing hands, arms, face, and feet before prayer. That interpretation has not been officially confirmed by the employee, the store, or any investigator. What has been confirmed is what everyone can see with their own eyes: an employee at a food-service establishment washing his feet in a sink where food is prepared.
NYC Health Department: This Isn’t Complicated
The New York City Health Department, in response to the viral clip, issued a plain-language statement that requires no interpretation:
“Food service workers can’t wash their feet in any sink within the establishment. Each sink has a specific purpose — and none of them are for washing feet.”
That covers it. There’s no cultural interpretation debate to have here. Whatever the worker’s motivation, the New York City Health Code says the sink is for hands and food-prep utensils. Not feet. Period.
Two Investigations, One Video
TMZ first reported Friday that the New York City Department of Transportation is investigating the incident — because the Staten Island Ferry Dunkin’ location falls within NYC DOT’s jurisdiction. TMZ also reported that the New York City Health Department has separately opened its own probe.
That’s two city agencies looking into the same 30-second TikTok video. The store’s franchise operator has not yet issued a public statement. Dunkin’ corporate has also been silent.
The Bigger Question — And Where This Connects
Just seven days before this video went viral, HBO’s Bill Maher delivered a New Rule monologue arguing that American values — including the basic norms every workplace runs on — are “not negotiable” for immigrants and residents alike. Maher’s specific line: “Do you like Western civilization? Because that’s what we are. And that’s not negotiable.”
Whether or not the Dunkin’ worker was performing a religious ritual, the point stands. American workplaces have sanitary codes. American food-service establishments have sink rules. American health inspectors enforce those rules. Every worker inside an American Dunkin’ — every one — is expected to follow them.

The Staten Island Ferry Dunkin’ remains open pending the investigations.
