Attacker Targets Idaho In-N-Out — Three Lost Lives, Armed Citizen Returns Fire

Three people lost their lives when a man opened fire at an In-N-Out restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday afternoon, according to local authorities. The shooting unfolded in what witnesses described as a chaotic scene that sent customers and employees fleeing for safety in the middle of a busy weekend afternoon.

At least two others suffered injuries in the incident, though Twin Falls spokesperson Josh Palmer said the number of wounded is expected to rise as the investigation continues. Authorities are working to contact all individuals who may have been present during the shooting, as some victims may have left the scene before emergency responders arrived or sought medical treatment at nearby facilities on their own.

“We believe the threat to the community is over,” Twin Falls Police Chief Josh Hicks said at a news conference. “The suspected attacker in this incident is deceased.”

Hicks noted that the attacker’s motive and identity remain under investigation. Authorities have not yet named the victims as next-of-kin notifications are ongoing. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages and that they are reviewing witness statements, surveillance footage, and social media videos to piece together the exact sequence of events.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time in a busy shopping area that includes restaurants and a large movie theater. The location is a popular destination for families on weekends, particularly during the summer months, and the shopping district was crowded with shoppers and diners when the violence erupted. The timing of the attack, during the lunch rush at a well-known fast food establishment, meant that numerous bystanders were in the immediate vicinity when shots were fired.

“We are responding to an incident in the area of In-N-Out. We are asking all residents and visitors to avoid the area so officers and first responders can work safely.”

Videos circulating on social media showed a male with a rifle in the direction of the restaurant from what appeared to be a nearby parking lot. The footage, which spread rapidly online in the hours following the shooting, captured the terrifying moments as the situation unfolded, with the sound of gunfire audible in multiple recordings posted by witnesses.

Additional videos purported to show an armed citizen returning fire. The presence of what appears to be a private citizen engaging the attacker has raised questions about the role of armed bystanders in active shooter situations, though authorities have not yet confirmed the identity or actions of any individuals who may have intervened during the incident.

A shelter-in-place order was put in effect for the area as law enforcement descended on the scene. Several roads leading into the area were shut down and later re-opened as police worked to ensure the threat had been subdued. The evacuation and lockdown procedures affected nearby businesses and a movie theater complex, where patrons were held inside for their safety until authorities gave the all-clear.

Idaho Governor Brad Little called on residents to pray for the people of Twin Falls as law enforcement worked to contain the situation. The governor’s office has been in contact with local officials and has offered state resources to assist with the investigation and response efforts.

“Idahoans, join me in keeping the Twin Falls community in your prayers as law enforcement and first responders respond to an active situation near In-N-Out,” Little wrote on X. “Please avoid the area and follow directions from law enforcement as they work to keep everyone safe.”

In-N-Out issued a statement expressing their sadness at the loss of life and extending prayers to the victims and those impacted by the violence. The California-based burger chain, which has a devoted following throughout the western United States, opened its Twin Falls location several years ago and it has become a popular dining destination in the community.

“We are heartbroken,” In-N-Out Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick said on Saturday. “Our prayers go out to our Customers, our Associates, and all of their families. We are working with the Twin Falls Police Department to assist in the ongoing investigation.”

It remains unclear if the three confirmed fatalities include the attacker. Authorities indicated they would provide updated casualty figures as the investigation progresses and all victims have been properly identified and their families notified.
