Democrat Senate Nominee Graham Platner Faces Rape Allegation — Party Leaders Demand Exit

The Maine Democrat Senate nominee is facing a bombshell rape allegation from a former girlfriend — and party leaders are demanding he drop out before next Monday’s ballot deadline.

Jenny Racicot, 41, alleges that Graham Platner, 41, entered her home without permission in late 2021 while highly intoxicated and forced her to have sex with him despite her repeated objections, according to POLITICO reporting.

Racicot expanded on the allegations in a detailed CNN interview Monday, recounting the specific events of that night.

“One of the reasons I didn’t come forward sooner was, the huge moral conflict that I had between supporting his politics, but not supporting him as a person. I just want the truth out there. I just want people to have a whole scope of who he is as a person.”

Racicot said she had been in an on-and-off relationship with Platner after meeting him on a dating app in 2019. She cut off all contact immediately following the alleged incident and informed him the sexual encounter was not consensual.

The allegation comes one week before the July 13th ballot deadline — the final opportunity under Maine law for Platner to voluntarily withdraw and allow the state Democrat Party to select a replacement nominee.

Platner, a combat veteran and left-wing progressive who secured the nomination in June after an insurgent campaign, adamantly denies the allegation.

In a video statement released on social media, Platner called the accusation categorically false and dismissed the report as a coordinated smear by establishment political operatives.

“These allegations are very serious and Graham vigorously denies them. They are also coached and coordinated by out of state establishment operatives. For a year, opponents of this campaign have thrown everything they can at Graham –– calling him a Nazi, a war criminal, and a communist. None of it has been true and this is no different. It is not a coincidence that this story comes a week before the ballot deadline, just as the previous false allegations came a week before the primary.”

The charges remain allegations. The case has not been proven in court.

The fallout has been instantaneous. Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) officially withdrew their endorsements Monday afternoon.

Khanna said the allegations crossed a definitive red line and that Platner must drop out.

Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer and Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee chair Kirsten Gillibrand issued a joint statement demanding Platner immediately withdraw.

“The allegations reported today are incredibly disturbing – violence, abuse and sexual assault are absolutely unacceptable. The DSCC will not invest in the Maine Senate race if Platner remains on the ballot.”

Within hours, the Maine Democrat Party leadership issued a formal statement urging their nominee to step down immediately.

The Maine Senate seat is widely considered a must-win for Democrats hoping to reclaim the chamber. The party now faces a tight timeline to convince Platner to step aside before the 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time deadline next Monday, which would trigger a two-week window for party officials to choose a new candidate.

Platner’s campaign immediately postponed multiple public events as senior staff assess the long-term viability of his bid to unseat Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins.
