The Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department shut down a major intersection near George Washington University Wednesday after responding to a report of a suspicious package.

The package was located at the corner of 23rd Street and I Street Northwest, an MPD spokeswoman told the Daily Caller.

The intersection near the GWU Hospital and WMATA Metro stop remains closed “while we work to resolve the incident,” the spokeswoman said. Police are asking people to avoid the area.

The suspicious package report comes just hours after a separate hazmat incident at the Pentagon, a few miles from the university.

Arlington County Fire and EMS later determined that “no hazard exists” at the Pentagon after deploying hazardous materials teams to support Pentagon Force Protection Agency investigators.
