Democrat Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey appeared on CNN today, vocally opposing President Trump’s decision to withhold funds from Harvard University. This bold decision comes as a response to Harvard’s inability to address the rampant antisemitism that has plagued its campus for over a year.
Senator Markey, in his distinct Boston accent, criticized this move as a form of “McCarthyism,” arguing it doesn’t solve the issue. Yet, it’s worth noting that Democrats like Markey often shy away from confronting their radical leftist contingents, choosing instead to target President Trump when he takes action.
The Daily Caller reported:
Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey claimed Tuesday President Donald Trump channeled “McCarthyism” by threatening to pull over $200 million in federal funds for Harvard University.
The Trump administration is conducting an investigation into the Ivy League school for its failure to tackle antisemitism, especially following the tragic events of October 7, 2023, when the radical Islamic terrorist group Hamas attacked, resulting in over 1,200 deaths in Israel. Senator Markey argued that this push against antisemitism could result in negative outcomes for the United States.
“Look, anti-Semitism is wrong, anti-Semitism must be fought, anti-Semitism is something that we cannot tolerate in our nation,” Markey emphasized. “But authoritarianism is not the answer to anti-Semitism. Harvard University has hundreds, thousands of scientists working on finding the cure for Alzheimer‘s, for cancer, for diabetes, for Parkinson‘s disease.”
Continuing, Markey stated, “If the plan of this administration is to just absolutely wipe out the research that we are doing all across our country, especially at our universities that have drawn the smartest young people in our country and around the world to find the cure for these diseases, and do so in an authoritarian way, that it is going to ultimately wind up very bad for our country.”

With an endowment larger than the economy of some small nations, Harvard is likely to endure this financial hit just fine.
