High-rise under construction in Bangkok collapses amid magnitude 7.7 earthquake.

In a tragic turn of events, a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake has rocked the heart of Southeast Asia, shaking both Myanmar and Thailand to their core this past Friday. This devastating earthquake left a trail of destruction, including the collapse of a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok.

Reports confirm that at least 144 lives have been lost in Myanmar, with hundreds more injured. In Thailand, the numbers are also grim, with 10 fatalities, over a dozen injured, and more than 100 construction workers missing after the catastrophic collapse of the high-rise.

According to a report by the AP, this natural disaster brought down buildings, bridges, and even a monastery, leaving a significant mark on the landscape of Myanmar and Thailand. The sheer scale of damage in Myanmar is still unfolding, stymied by ongoing civil unrest and tight information control.

The head of Myanmar’s military government, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, has stated on national television that the numbers are likely to keep rising, with already 144 confirmed dead and 730 injured in his country.

In Bangkok, the city authorities are similarly grappling with the aftermath. They have confirmed 10 fatalities, 16 injuries, and 101 individuals remain unaccounted for across three construction sites, including the ill-fated high-rise.
