A mob of street-racing agitators invaded an off-campus house at York College of Pennsylvania early Saturday morning and brutally assaulted multiple female students who were sitting on their front porch.
The victims were dragged by the hair, punched, kicked, maced, and beaten unconscious in the assault, according to witness accounts provided to Fox 43.
Three juvenile females have now been arrested on charges including rioting, assault, and trespassing, York Police announced Friday morning.
“I was getting kicked by probably 12 people at the same time. I don’t exactly remember how I got out of it, but I was encircled by probably 30 people by myself getting video recorded while getting punched and kicked from every angle.”
The confrontation began just before 1:50 a.m. when one of the cars participating in an illegal street takeover crashed into a parked vehicle near the students’ rental home. When the crowd migrated onto the property, the students asked them to leave.
“One of the cars street racing smashed into a parked car by the firehouse, which is right next to the house. When this happened, all of the townies migrated over towards the house and on the grass. We all asked them to move off the property, and that’s when everything erupted,” one victim told Fox 43.
What happened next was a brutal assault that left multiple students with serious injuries.
“I remember looking at our friend in the knee brace when I got caught off guard and ripped by my hair off the porch,” one student said. “From then, I was dragged to the stop sign and that’s when everyone jumped me.”
One student was trying to hold her tube top up with one arm while being pummeled in the face with no way to defend herself. Another victim believes she lost consciousness at least twice — once when kicked in the ribs, and again when struck in the head.
The students say they made five separate calls to authorities before the assault and were told police were on their way.
York Police officers were occupied with a SWAT situation involving a barricaded individual after reports of gunfire, authorities later explained. The department requested mutual aid from neighboring agencies when reports of the off-campus brawl came in.
“At approximately 1:49 am, York City Police were dispatched to the 300 block of W. Jackson St. for a fight involving a large gathering of individuals. At the time of this call, York City police officers were fully engaged in a previous, ongoing critical incident investigation.”
By the time officers arrived at 1:52 a.m., the mob had already dispersed. Police continued monitoring the area while patrol officers met with victims and gathered evidence.
York police and city officials have not addressed whether the incident was racially motivated. The college students were white and some members of the mob appear in video footage to be black.
Street takeovers — also known as “sideshows” — have become a persistent problem in cities across the U.S., proliferating during the Covid era. The illegal gatherings typically feature cars doing high-speed doughnuts in intersections, with fireworks and smoke bombs creating chaos designed for social media posting.
Earlier this month, Los Angeles police mounted a massive effort to crack down on the practice, using drones and 150 officers to make 69 arrests, impound 200 cars, and issue 570 citations to onlookers.
One victim’s father blasted authorities for the slow response despite repeated calls for help.
“It’s not just the girls who got assaulted; it is everybody on Jackson Street. We’re not talking about five girls and possibly their roommates, we’re talking about hundreds of students, so their response is completely ridiculous,” he told Fox 43.
During Friday’s news conference, York’s mayor and law enforcement warned that such lawlessness “will not be tolerated” but acknowledged it was a “public safety concern” plaguing cities nationwide.
The three juvenile suspects face charges of rioting, assault, and trespassing.
A blonde York College student was ripped off her own porch by the hair, dragged to a stop sign, and beaten while a crowd filmed it for content.
Her friends called 911 five times.
