In a spirited exchange on “Fox News Sunday,” Peter Navarro, senior advisor for trade and manufacturing for President Trump, passionately defended the administration’s tariff policies. Host Shannon Bream pressed Navarro on the potential impact of auto tariffs on American consumers, prompting a robust response from the advisor.
Bream asked, “What is the message to the US consumer?” In classic Navarro style, he fired back, “Message is that tariffs are tax cuts, tariffs are jobs, tariffs are national security, tariffs are great for America, tariffs will make America great again.”
Navarro was quick to highlight the triumphs of tariffs during President Trump’s first term, underscoring the economic stability and growth achieved. He outlined the economic windfall expected from the proposed tariffs, which are anticipated to raise approximately $100 billion from auto tariffs alone, coupled with tax incentives for those opting to buy American-made cars.
“In addition, the other tariffs are gonna raise about 600 billion dollars a year, about 6 trillion over a 10-year period, and we are gonna have tax cuts. The biggest tax cut in American history for the middle class,” Navarro asserted.
Emphasizing the importance of supporting domestic manufacturing, Navarro stressed the strategic implications of foreign investment in the car industry. He noted the staggering levels of foreign content in vehicles purchased by Americans annually, posing potential risks to national security.
“We got 16 million cars we buy every year. Half of those, half of those are imported with virtually no American content. And the other half, Shannon, 50 percent of that is foreign content,” Navarro cautioned.
