Representative Sylvester Turner (D-TX) has passed away at the age of 70. Known for his storied political career, Turner was elected to Congress in November following the passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and took office in January 2025. Sadly, his tenure was cut short.
Rep. Turner was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in his jaw in 2022, a form of bone cancer. His legacy includes his tenure as Houston’s mayor from 2016 to 2024, where he championed liberal policies, including abortion and LGBTQ initiatives, alongside promoting mass migration.
This morning, @houmayor John Whitmire announced the death of former mayor, Congressman Sylvester Turner.
“A remarkable public servant who impacted millions of people. He rose from poverty, but never forgot where he came from. It is a terrible loss for the city and a personal loss…”— City of Houston (@HoustonTX)

According to The National Pulse, Turner was a staunch left-wing Democrat who briefly served in Congress after a long-standing career in Texas politics. Born in Houston, his journey began in law before serving over 25 years in the Texas House of Representatives. His mayoral role in Houston was marked by support for expansive LGBT initiatives, mass migration policies, and taxpayer-funded abortion programs.
Turner, elected to Congress in 2024 after Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s death, served less than two months due to his untimely passing. His political path was not without its controversies. A failed 1991 mayoral campaign was overshadowed by an insurance fraud allegation, although he was never charged. During his mayoral tenure, Turner faced criticism for a $95,000-a-year internship for a connected law graduate and an alleged favoritism scandal in affordable housing contracts. Additionally, a corruption case involving a top aide who admitted to accepting bribes marred his administration. Just before leaving office, a water department contract fraud scheme came to light.

In one of his final posts, Turner took to X to voice his disapproval of President Trump and Elon Musk’s Medicaid policies: “President Trump and Elon Musk’s push to gut Medicaid is nothing short of a betrayal of the most vulnerable among us,” he declared. “They are playing politics with children’s lives, and I will not stand for it.”
Let me be clear: any cuts to Medicaid are a direct attack on families like Angela Hernandez’s family.
