In a harrowing incident that has left New Yorkers reeling, four young girls were viciously attacked with a meat cleaver in an assault halted by the brave actions of the NYC police officers. The suspect, wielding the weapon, was shot by law enforcement, bringing an end to the terrifying ordeal.
According to WABC-TV, the victims—aged 8, 11, 13, and 16—faced this nightmare in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. An alert 11-year-old girl managed to call 911, despite an initial hiccup in the process.
In a press conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained the situation, “The 11-year-old caller stated that she and her siblings had been stabbed by her uncle. She did not know her address.”
The police, displaying remarkable determination, tracked the call to the Bensonhurst area, as reported by WNYW. Upon arrival, officers heard screams and promptly forced their way into the apartment.
Inside, they found a man brandishing a bloodied cleaver, with gruesome evidence of his attack surrounding him. Tisch described, “Once they entered, they encountered a man standing near the entrance holding a large meat cleaver, covered in blood, and they could see blood on the floor and the walls of the home.”
When the suspect advanced on them, ignoring orders to drop the weapon, the officers acted decisively, discharging their firearms and neutralizing the threat. “Two officers discharged their firearms, firing seven total rounds between them and striking the subject, ending the threat,” Tisch stated.
Highlighting the coordinated efforts, Tisch credited the swift response of the 911 operator and officers for saving the girls’ lives. The New York Times reports that the officers kicked down a locked door to reach the children.
“This could have ended very differently,” Tisch emphasized, referring to the potential tragedy that was averted. The New York Post described the assailant, Lun Chang Chen, as a “maniac.” Chen, 49, who lived with the victims, was critically injured in the incident.
A fifth child, a boy, had fortunately escaped the apartment to seek help during the attack.
Area residents, still in shock, recounted the horror. “I was watching through the window, and the girl covered in blood came out,” shared a neighbor named Maria. “And then there was another girl. The two girls were just covered in blood. I was shaking. I’m still shaking now.”
WABC also reported that Chen had a history of mental illness, and a bloody knife was found at the scene, alongside the cleaver.
Carl Caltabiano, a local resident, commented on the brave police action, “Police came in and did what they had to do to save the children. Terrible.”
Amidst recent discussions on law and order, this incident underscores the critical role of law enforcement in safeguarding our communities.
