The Pentagon, in a move to streamline operations under the Trump Administration, is set to cut between 50,000 to 60,000 civilian jobs from the Defense Department. This strategic decision is aimed at reducing the workforce without compromising military readiness.

As reported by the Associated Press, the expected reduction will not include the fewer than 21,000 workers who have opted for a voluntary resignation plan, set to depart in the upcoming months.

Roughly 50,000 to 60,000 civilian jobs will be cut in the Defense Department, but fewer than 21,000 workers who took a voluntary resignation plan are leaving in the coming months, a senior defense official told reporters Tuesday.

To achieve a target of a 5% to 8% cut in the civilian workforce—currently more than 900,000—the department plans to eliminate about 6,000 positions monthly by not replacing workers who leave on their own accord.

Concerns have been raised that service members might be required to fill in these civilian roles. However, a senior defense official, speaking anonymously, assured that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is committed to ensuring these reductions do not hinder military capabilities.
