In a striking twist of fate, the Trump Administration has taken decisive action by referring New York Attorney General Letitia James to the Justice Department over grave accusations of mortgage fraud.
The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), led by Director Bill Pulte, has accused Letitia James of falsifying records related to a New York property. By allegedly misrepresenting a 5-unit property as only four units, James secured a more favorable loan.

This saga was recently spotlighted when it emerged that Letitia James had consistently claimed her Brooklyn property was a four-unit building in mortgage applications for over two decades, defying official records showing it had five units.
Such a misrepresentation is far from trivial. It enabled James to obtain advantageous loans, including a 2011 Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) loan, saving her significant annual sums. This secured her a conforming loan through Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, only available for properties up to 4 units.

The Certificate of Occupancy clearly designates the property as a 5-unit dwelling, highlighting the alleged discrepancy.

Adding to the allegations, Bill Pulte noted that James falsely identified a property in Virginia as her ‘primary residence,’ despite not residing there. In a powerful critique on Fox News, Johnathan Turley remarked, “This is a person who prosecuted Trump for everything short of ripping a label off a mattress, and among the charges that were brought in New York, in just the civil but the criminal case, was making false or misleading statements to financial institutions. As for James, if we apply the Letitia James standard that she created, thereād be little question here. This seems pretty straightforward.”

Fox News has uncovered documents showing the FHFA’s criminal referral to the Department of Justice, accusing James of mortgage fraud. Director Pulte addressed a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, implying that James manipulated records to meet lending criteria and secure beneficial loan terms.
Intriguingly, there are further claims from 1983, where James reportedly married her father, Robert James, or falsified loan documents, according to New York City Department of Finance records.
