In a bold move against public corruption, Kash Patel took to social media platform X on Wednesday, sharing news of a significant breakthrough. A top-ranking official at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been charged with attempting to defraud the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and lying to federal agents.

Patel stated, “Following efforts with our interagency partners, I can report that a career Director level employee at US Customs and Border Protection has been charged with allegedly attempting to defraud FEMA, as well as lying to federal agents.” He emphasized that this is part of the FBI’s renewed commitment to tackling public corruption and ensuring justice for the American people.

The accused, Serina Baker-Hill, 55, is based in Detroit and oversees the Center for Excellence and Expertise over Automotive and Aerospace Engineering at CBP. According to the press release, she is alleged to have taken advantage of a federal disaster declaration following floods in Michigan in August 2023.

Baker-Hill applied for FEMA aid, claiming damage to her basement, which supposedly rendered her home uninhabitable. FEMA provided funds for home repairs and rental assistance, yet bank records allegedly show she pocketed the cash while continuing to live in her home.

Surveillance footage allegedly captured her and her husband residing comfortably in the claimed damaged home. Utility records reportedly supported this, showing no decrease in consumption that would be expected from an empty residence.

When confronted by FBI and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility agents, Baker-Hill denied any wrongdoing.

The FBI’s Detroit Border Corruption Task Force, along with CBP-OPR and the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General, led the investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eaton P. Brown.

Authorities remind the public that Baker-Hill is innocent until proven guilty. Decisions on whether to pursue felony indictments will follow the completion of the investigation.
