In a bold move that underscores Poland’s commitment to national defense, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has unveiled a comprehensive plan to bolster the nation’s military prowess. Speaking passionately before Parliament, Tusk proposed a remarkable expansion of Poland’s army and an ambitious training initiative for every able-bodied man in the country. His vision also includes exploring the acquisition of nuclear capabilities.
Tusk addressed the Sejm, emphasizing the urgency of “large-scale military training for every adult male in Poland.” This proactive stance aims to prepare a formidable reserve force, ready to confront potential threats.
“We will try to have a model ready by the end of this year so that every adult male in Poland is trained in the event of war, so that this reserve is comparable and adequate to the potential threats.”

Highlighting the disparities in regional military capacities, Tusk noted Ukraine’s 800,000-strong military and Russia’s 1.3 million troops. To counterbalance, he plans to expand Poland’s armed forces, aiming for a total strength of 500,000, including reservists, up from the current 200,000.
Tusk stated, “We’re talking about the need to have an army of half a million in Poland, including the reservists. It seems if we organize things wisely, and I’m talking constantly with the Minister of Defense, we will have to use several courses of action. That means the reservists, but also intensive training to make those who do not go into the army fully-fledged and competent soldiers during a conflict.”

Tusk is also weighing France’s proposal to extend its nuclear protection across Europe, though he remains cautious about the implications of such an alliance. He remarked, “I would like to know first of all in detail what it means in terms of the authority over these weapons. Today, it is clear that we would be safer if we had our own nuclear arsenal, that is beyond doubt. In any case, the road to that would be very long and there would have to be a consensus too.”
The Prime Minister is setting a new benchmark for defense spending, with 4.7% of GDP already allocated and plans to increase this to 5%, the highest in NATO. Furthermore, Tusk supports Poland’s potential withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention, which bans antipersonnel landmines, and possibly the Dublin Convention, which prohibits cluster munitions.
