Before that pivotal day on January 6th, I, James Tate Grant, was on the path to a promising legal career, backed by multiple scholarships from esteemed institutions like Washington and Lee and the University of Alabama. My involvement in the Capitol protest has set me back three years, but it also taught me much through the hardships endured.

At the age of 28, I was a determined political science major who had just taken the LSAT shortly after the Capitol events, scoring in the impressive 92nd percentile. These achievements secured me merit scholarships to top universities. Sadly, my arrest prevented me from attending classes, derailing my academic pursuits.

As I approach my 33rd birthday, I’m a transformed individual. My time in federal custody for over 32 months, due to a non-violent fence push, subjected me to fights, abuse, and deplorable conditions. Yet in adversity, I discovered the profound love of a merciful God, embracing Christ while incarcerated.

With heartfelt gratitude, I thank you, Mr. President, for the pardon. My aspiration to become an attorney remains unwavering. During my imprisonment, I witnessed firsthand the lackluster representation many defendants endure. My own attorney ignored my over 40 attempts to reach him by phone.

Experiencing subpar legal advocacy only fueled my passion for law. I am committed to becoming a lawyer and believe I would excel in this role. Returning to law school would be the ultimate redemption.

Speaking at the Western Wake Republican Club in North Carolina, I shared my story and renewed my commitment to applying to numerous law schools. With application fees reaching up to $100 each, your support is invaluable in helping me reclaim my life and pursue my dreams. Each contribution could fund the application that transforms my future.

Thank you sincerely for your prayers, donations, and support. You’ve profoundly impacted my life, and I am endlessly grateful and humbled.
