In a defiant response to President Donald Trump’s staunch America-first policies, Communist China has slapped an imposing 84% tariff on U.S. goods. This move, marking a stark increase from the previous 34%, underscores China’s challenge to Trump’s bold economic stance.
Beijing’s State Council Tariff Commission announced this decision following the Trump administration’s unwavering commitment to protect American workers by raising tariffs on Chinese imports to over 104%. The Chinese government predictably condemned the U.S., resorting to the usual propaganda by labeling it as “unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying.”
This is typical of a regime that’s spent years manipulating global trade in its favor, flooding international markets with cheap, subsidized products, and taking advantage of weak American leadership—until now.
“On April 8, 2025, the US government announced that it would increase the “reciprocal tariff” on Chinese goods exported to the US from 34% to 84%.
The US’s practice of escalating tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake, which seriously infringes on China’s legitimate rights and interests, seriously damages the rules-based multilateral trading system, and seriously impacts the stability of the global economic order. It is a typical example of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying.
In accordance with the Tariff Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Customs Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China and other laws and regulations and the basic principles of international law, and with the approval of the State Council, the State Council Tariff Commission announced that from 12:01 on April 10, 2025, the tariff rate specified in the Announcement of the State Council Tariff Commission on Imposing Additional Tariffs on Imports Originating in the United States (Tariff Commission Announcement No. 4 of 2025) will be adjusted from 34% to 84%. Other matters shall be implemented in accordance with the Announcement No. 4 of 2025 of the Tariff Commission.
China urges the US to immediately correct its wrong practices, cancel all unilateral tariff measures against China, and properly resolve differences with China through equal dialogue on the basis of mutual respect.”
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave a candid assessment on Fox Business, stating, “It’s unfortunate that the Chinese actually don’t want to come and negotiate, because they are the worst offenders in the international trading system.” He confidently added, “They have the most imbalanced economy in the history of the modern world, and I can tell you that this escalation is a loser for them.”

Recently, President Trump implemented a rigorous 104% tariff on Chinese imports after Beijing failed to heed his “12 o’clock” deadline to remove its retaliatory tariffs. This massive tariff includes a pre-existing 20% duty, a 34% reciprocal levy, and a substantial 50% retaliatory tariff from the U.S.
China’s hasty tariff increase is a clear sign of desperation. The Communist regime understands that Trump’s strategies—such as reshoring manufacturing, securing supply chains, and penalizing unfair trade practices—are effectively revitalizing the American economy. U.S. factories are thriving, job growth is on the rise, and for the first time in decades, America is negotiating from a position of strength.
Conversely, China’s economy is struggling, plagued by a faltering real estate market, record-breaking youth unemployment, and a slowdown in economic growth. The Chinese Communist Party’s only strategy remains bullying, yet they face a U.S. president who stands firm and unwavering.
