In a tragic turn of events, a 14-year-old has been charged with the murder of Detective Joseph Azcona, following a fatal shooting in New Jersey. The young suspect opened fire, unleashing 29 rounds with an automatic weapon when officers responded to reports of illegal firearms possession.
The community is mourning the loss of Detective Azcona, a dedicated officer who had served for five years. As Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens stated, “Five-year veteran Joseph Azcona was shot before he even had the opportunity to leave his police car.”
The confrontation occurred near a local McDonald’s, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Sadly, Detective Azcona succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while a second officer, whose injuries are not life-threatening, is currently recovering.
“The officers involved are heroes.”
Prosecutor Stephens emphasized the need for understanding how such a young individual came to be involved in this deadly situation. “We need to focus laser sharp on trying to find the reason why this 14-year-old was in the situation that he was — had a gun, felt he could use it against police,” Stephens remarked. “That’s a crazy situation. That’s one that cannot go unchecked.”
Authorities are also questioning five other individuals in connection with this grave incident. More details can be found in the New York Post report.
Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has expressed his concern and solidarity in a statement, urging the public to support the officers and their families during this challenging time:
“I have been updated on an incident that took place in Newark earlier tonight involving two officers that were shot. This is a rapidly developing situation. Please pray for these officers, their families, and all our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to keep us safe.”
