The man hailed as a hero for disarming one of the Bondi Beach shooters was charged Wednesday with alleged domestic assault against his father, according to police statements.
Ahmed, who tackled and subdued an armed gunman during the April mass shooting at the iconic Sydney beach, now faces charges stemming from an alleged incident at his family home.
“The charges remain allegations. The case has not been proven in court.”
New South Wales police allege Ahmed physically assaulted his father during a domestic dispute. Specific details of the alleged assault have not been publicly released.
The April shooting at Bondi Beach left multiple people injured before Ahmed and other bystanders intervened to stop the gunman. Ahmed’s quick action was widely praised by officials and the public at the time.
Ahmed allegedly appeared in court briefly on the domestic violence charge. Prosecutors did not immediately comment on the evidence supporting the allegation.
The case raises questions about how Australian authorities will handle the prosecution of a man still celebrated by many as a hero. Ahmed’s attorney has not issued a public statement.
A court date for the domestic assault charge has been set for later this month.
