One of the leading candidates to fill Vice President-elect J.D. Vance’s seat in the U.S. Senate recently travelled to President-elect Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate as a decision looms.

Under Ohio law, Republican Governor Mike DeWine will be tasked with selecting a replacement for Vance until 2026. At that point, a special election will be held to determine who will serve out the remainder of Vance’s term, which ends in 2028. The winner of the special election will then have to run again in 2028 in order to secure a full, six-year term.

DeWine is widely expected to be making his decision within the coming weeks, as the new Congress is set to be sworn in on January 3.

Earlier this week, DeWine traveled to Trump’s Palm Beach residence with Republican Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted, who is believed to be a top candidate to replace Vance, according to a report from News 5 Cleveland.

Dan Tierney, a spokesman for the governor’s office, told Fox News that DeWine is looking for a “workhorse” who is “qualified and ready to earn the trust of Ohio voters for another term.”

In addition to Husted, DeWine is reportedly considering Mehek Cooke, a Republican attorney who served as a political and legal surrogate for Trump in 2024 in the overwhelmingly pro-Trump state. Cooke has garnered a reputation as a formidable GOP fundraiser in Ohio and has defended the former president against politically motivated prosecutions in numerous network segments.

Businessman and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was previously viewed as a top contender for the role and had expressed openness to it, though he was recently appointed to a brand new presidential task force aimed at cleaning up government waste, a task he will work to complete alongside X owner Elon Musk. The appointment seemingly rules Ramaswamy out of consideration for the time being, though he has expressed interest in running for governor at some point in the future.

Additional candidates include State Senator Matt Dolan, a staunch ally of DeWine who previously launched unsuccessful primary bids against Vance and Senator-elect Bernie Moreno. Other possibilities include former Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who also ran in the primary against Moreno, along with the state’s Republican Attorney General Dave Yost, Fox News reported.

“I’m always ready to answer the call of duty, but I’m also focused right now on doing the job Ohioans hired me to do,” LaRose told the outlet when asked for comment. “We delivered another secure, accurate and accessible election for Ohio voters, and that work continues. We need to certify the results on an expedited timeline to accommodate the electoral college meeting next month.”

“We’re still working with our boards of elections to process absentee ballots and help voters cure provisional ballots. We’ve got a potential recount in one congressional district race. We’re also not letting up the pressure on the Biden administration to give us the federal citizenship records we need to ensure the accuracy of Ohio’s voter rolls. There’s a lot to be done. I know Governor DeWine has an important decision to make, and I’m confident he’ll do what’s in the best interest of Ohio.”

Quantus Insights — a relatively new pollster who rose to national prominence by putting out some of the most accurate polls for the 2024 presidential election — explained the keys to their approach in a lengthy blog post.

Quantus Insights, which is sponsored by Trending Politics and led by Jason Corley, managed to beat out several established pollsters who had been given “A” ratings by prominent polling aggregators like FiveThirtyEight and Nate Silver during the 2024 campaign cycle. The “A-rated” Marist College, whose polls were lauded as the “gold standard” for national polling, predicted a comfortable, 51-47 popular vote victory for Vice President Kamala Harris in its final poll, resulting in a wide miss of 5.5 percentage points.

YouGov, which boasts a perfect three-star rating from FiveThirtyEight, missed by 2.5 percentage points, while the “B-rated” MorningConsult missed by 3.5.

Quantus Insights, on the other hand, almost perfectly predicted the popular vote with a miss of just 0.7. “Quantus Insights perfectly nailed the popular vote, alright?” said Fox News’ Jesse Watters in the days following the election. “Those are the two you’ve gotta look to next election,” he added in reference to Quantus and Atlas Intel.

“In the unpredictable world of election polling, accuracy isn’t just a  benchmark—it’s the gold standard by which pollsters earn trust and credibility,” Quantus Insights founder Jason Corley wrote in a post-election blog post published on Thursday. “In the 2024 presidential election, Quantus Insights proved itself to be one of the most accurate and reliable polling organizations  in the nation, delivering results that stood out in an industry often  criticized for misses and missteps.”

In total, Quantus Insights had a combined error rate of just one point across the pivotal Rust Belt states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

“These states are notoriously difficult to poll due to demographic diversity, turnout variability, and their swing-state status. Despite these challenges, Quantus Insights achieved remarkable accuracy,” the post-election analysis continued.

In Michigan, Quantus Insights projected a Trump victory with a 1.2 percent error for Trump and 0.9 percent for Harris, a 2.1 percent combined error rate. The results were “nearly flawless” in Pennsylvania, as the Trending Politics-sponsored pollster missed Trump’s vote percentage by just one point, while the error towards Harris was just 0.5 percent.

As for Wisconsin — a state that has historically viewed as difficult to poll — Quantus Insights’ combined error rate was an astonishingly low 0.6 percent.

The results remained consistent in additional swing states like Nevada, where Quantus was off by just 1.9 percent. Quantus also managed to accurately pick up on a number of “subtle shifts” in another notoriously challenging state to poll, Corley noted in his analysis. Results were similar in North Carolina, where Quantus posted a combined error rate of just 1.6 percentage points.

“These successes are not just outliers—they reflect a commitment to methodological rigor, real-time analysis, and a deep understanding of voter behavior,” Corley wrote.

At the national level, Quantus predicted that Trump would receive 49.1 percent of the vote compared to 48.3 percent for Harris, a miss of just 0.7 percentage points.

If things are mostly settled at this point, this is where Quantus Insight stands for it’s October polling–a combined 1-point error rate across the Rust Belt and National level.

“Quantus Insights’ combined election models were among the most accurate of the 2024 cycle, giving Trump a 65% chance to win the presidency and the popular vote. This model, based on advanced turnout predictions and demographic  analysis, proved remarkably effective in capturing the final Electoral  College outcome of 312 votes for Trump and 226 for Harris,” Corley explained.

“While other pollsters struggled to account for late-breaking trends or enthusiasm gaps, Quantus excelled in adjusting for these variables, ensuring projections remained both accurate and actionable.”

While wildly inaccurate polls like Ann Selzer’s infamous Des Moines County Register survey dominated headlines throughout the campaign cycle, Quantus Insights “consistently delivered accuracy and reliability” the analysis continued. Corley then listed three core principles that were key to the pollster’s success in 2024, including: Methodical Innovation, Data Transparency and Commitment to Excellence.

“Quantus Insights has set a new benchmark for what accuracy and reliability should look like in a fast-evolving political landscape,” the firm’s thorough post-election analysis concluded.

President-elect Trump weighed in on Truth Social in a statement Wednesday where he demanded Republicans hold firm and pass a “streamlined funding bill” that doesn’t give concessions away to Democrats to secure their votes. “Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH. If Democrats threaten to shut down the government unless we give them everything they want, then CALL THEIR BLUFF. It is Schumer and [President Joe] Biden who are holding up aid to our farmers and disaster relief,” Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance said in a joint statement. He followed up on those remarks with an appearance on Fox News Thursday morning, where he promised to support Johnson as the speaker if he “acts decisively” to end the impasse on conservative terms.

Vice President Harris was invited to appear on Rogan’s podcast, though the campaign ultimately declined after refusing to sit for just one hour, a sharp deviation from the usual flow of Rogan’s show. A number of Harris aides have conceded that skipping the podcast was a mistake in the wake of her defeat.

“Sports and culture have sort of merged together, and as sports and culture became more publicly and sort of natively associated with this Trump-conservative set of values, it got more complicated for athletes to come out in favor of us,” Flaherty said. “It got more complicated for sports personalities to take us on their shows because they didn’t want to ‘do politics.’”

Just under four years after NFL teams staged league-wide protests against Trump during Collin Kaepernick’s national anthem controversy, Flaherty argued that the left was losing control of its traditional hold on major sports.

“That’s not to say Steph Curry and Steve Kerr and LeBron [James] and all them coming out wasn’t impactful or important,” Flaherty said. “It was more impactful because it had gotten so much harder. But certainly the culture that has been associated with heavy sports-watching has become associated with right-wing culture in a way that makes it harder for us to reach people.”

Trump’s popularity does appear to have surged in the world of sports. In the weeks following his re-election win, several NFL players mimicked the “Trump dance” as a touchdown or big play celebration. The president-elect has also become a regular attendee for UFC events, where he has received standing ovations in deep blue states like New Jersey and New York.

A significant majority of Americans appear to back one of President-elect Donald Trump’s cornerstone policy proposals, signaling more public support as he prepares to return to the White House. According to the latest CNBC All-America Economic Survey, a sweeping consensus has emerged around Trump’s campaign promises, suggesting the political winds may be shifting in his favor.

The survey reveals that 54% of the public are “comfortable and prepared to support” Trump as president. According to the findings, 60% believe that deploying the military to the border to halt illegal drugs and human trafficking should be an immediate priority for the new administration in 2025. An additional 13% agree it should be addressed, but later in the term. Only 24% are completely against the proposal, including 51% of Democrats, 12% of independents, and 3% of Republicans.

The survey found that Trump’s economic agenda—focused on deregulation, tax cuts, and restoring American manufacturing—resonates with the public. Jay Campbell, a partner at Hart Research and the Democratic pollster for the survey, noted a shift in public sentiment from 2016. “In 2016, there were a few more people who said, ‘I’m not sure,’ and took a kind of a wait-and-see approach,” he said. “Those numbers have dropped by half or more … People know what to expect with Donald Trump now.”

The survey revealed support for several policies, including reducing individual taxes, increasing deportations of undocumented immigrants, downsizing government operations, expanding oil drilling on federal lands, and easing taxes and regulations for businesses. The idea of raising tariffs received tepid support, with only 27% in favor of immediate action and 24% suggesting it could be addressed later in the term, against 42% opposition.

Americans are more optimistic about the economic prospects under Trump’s second presidency than they were during his first term. A notable 51% of respondents expect their personal financial situation to improve, a 10-point increase from 2016. 51% anticipate the U.S. economy will also get better, rising 5 points from the previous election.

As President Joe Biden exits office, public sentiment towards the economy remains largely negative. Only 25% of Americans rate the economy as excellent or good, while a significant 73% view it as fair or poor. Biden’s final economic approval stands at 36%, with 58% disapproving. His net approval rating has slightly improved from the lowest point in 2022 but remains negative at -22, a sharp decline from the +5 net positive at the start of his presidency.

Looking ahead, there’s a surge in economic optimism, primarily fueled by Republican enthusiasm following the election. Forty-six percent of Americans now believe the economy will improve over the next year, up nine points since October. This shift is largely driven by Republicans and, to some extent, independents moving from pessimism to optimism. Conversely, 33% think the economy will deteriorate, a rise of 16 points, reflecting increasingly pessimistic views among Democrats.

Forty percent of respondents believe now is a good time to invest in stocks, marking the most positive sentiment since 2019. This is a significant shift from Biden’s administration when opinions on stocks ranged from neutral to deeply negative. The change is largely attributed to Republicans, who, following the election, have become 56 points more positive about investing in stocks compared to their views in August.

Meanwhile, the survey highlights that while cryptocurrencies are generating buzz on Wall Street, they haven’t quite captured the same enthusiasm on Main Street. Currently, only 13% of Americans report owning cryptocurrency, and 15% view it as the best investment choice, a slight increase of 4 points from the last time this question was posed in 2022. However, crypto still lags behind more traditional investments like real estate, stocks, gold, and savings accounts in terms of popularity.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) came up well short in her bid to become the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, an influential position that would have given her an elevated platform.

In a private vote among the House Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee on Monday, House Democrats voted to nominate longtime U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) for the position, according to a report from Axios. The move represents a significant setback for Ocasio-Cortez, though the full Democratic Party caucus will still need to vote on whether to approve the committee’s nomination.

It is rare for a full caucus to rebuke a steering committee’s nomination — which is closely aligned with party leadership — though such a move is not without precedent.

The final vote was not particularly close, with Connolly defeating Ocasio-Cortez by a final tally of 34-27, according to multiple lawmakers who were present for the vote.

Despite the significant setback, AOC has vowed to continue her pursuit of the key position.

As ranking member, the progressive lawmaker would be the most senior member on the House Oversight Committee, which is tasked with ensuring efficiency, effectiveness and accountability of federal agencies. The ranking member plays a vital role in shaping legislation by offering amendments, conducting oversight, and offering crucial commentary on committee agendas.

The ongoing fight between Rep. Connolly, 74, and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, 35, comes as several senior Democrats have come up short in committee leadership bids against younger challengers. On Monday, Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN), 52, unseated 79-year-old Agriculture Committee ranking member David Scott (D-GA), as well as  Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA), 72, to lead the Agriculture panel.

U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) told Axios that Connolly’s seniority likely played a role in his victory, though it “wasn’t that just that.”

“Everyone sort of made the case that they would be the best to help change the message across the country. … He’s a very good communicator,” he said.

Another member, who spoke with the outlet on the condition of anonymity, blamed AOC’s loss on the committee’s composition, stating that it is “made up of the most senior members.”

Supporters of Ocasio-Cortez are holding out hope in the wake of the vote. “The majority of votes are in the caucus. We’re somewhere between 50 and 70 in [steering], but then it’s going to move up to a much larger 215,” said Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH). “The numbers could move. They all have a chance.”

A prominent Chinese economist just said what many people suspected: China’s official GDP numbers may not be accurate.

“We do not know the true number of China’s real growth figure and maybe some other numbers,” Gao Shanwen, the chief economist at SDIC Securities, said on Thursday.

Many people speculate that “after the pandemic, those numbers may not be so accurate,” he said at an event hosted by the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, DC. Gao previously advised the country’s policymakers.

Gao said China’s GDP probably averaged around 2% in the last two to three years even though the official number is “close to 5%,” Gao said.

“If my speculation is correct, I think it might be more reasonable to expect a growth rate between 3% to 4% in the years to come, for the next three to five years,” Gao said. “But we know, and I think, the official number will always be around 5%.”

China reported 5.2% GDP growth last year and has a growth target of “around 5%” this year — which economists said is ambitious.

While there have been long-standing doubts over the veracity of China’s GDP data, one economist explained to Business Insider in 2022 that the headline GDP figure is “systematically inflated” due to how it’s calculated and that it’s unlikely the central government in Beijing manipulates numbers.

Chinese youth are ‘tightening their belts and eating noodles with the lights off’

Gao made headlines recently for his comments at an investor conference about “lifeless” Chinese youths. Chinese censors have since taken the speech off the internet.

In the speech, Gao said his analysis of regional data found that the younger a province’s population is, the slower its consumption growth.

China is now “full of vibrant old people, lifeless young people, and middle-aged people in despair,” he said.

“Young people are tightening their belts and eating noodles with the lights off,” Gao added.

Gao’s assessment of China’s economy comes as the country struggles to recover from pandemic lockdowns.

The world’s second-largest economy is facing multiple issues, including a real-estate crisis, high youth unemployment, and deflation.

China’s economy has been holding up this year thanks to robust exports — but the country’s consumer demand has been dismal due to poor consumer confidence. Many people are trading down for cheaper purchases.
