The Democratic Party’s civil war just shifted to battleground territory.

After Democratic Socialists of America-backed challengers toppled longtime Democratic incumbents in New York City and Denver, the far-left movement is now targeting Missouri and Michigan primaries on August 4.

Former Rep. Cori Bush, who lost her St. Louis seat in 2024, posted on social media hours after socialist candidate Melat Kiros ousted 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado’s June primary: “On August 4th, St. Louis will do the same.”

“Only socialism can solve decades of capitalist mismanagement in the US. Our newly elected leaders will fight for the working class — not for crumbs.” — Democratic Socialists of America celebrating primary victories

The DSA, Justice Democrats, and Working Families Party have now backed 39 candidates — 20 challengers and 19 incumbents — heading into the 2026 midterms. Three major upset victories in deep-blue districts have emboldened progressives who see a national opening to reshape the Democratic Party from within.

The question: will the message on Medicare-for-all, the Green New Deal, higher taxes on the wealthy, and abolishing ICE resonate in November when Republicans are on the ballot?

The Missouri and Michigan Battlegrounds

Bush is running to reclaim her seat in Missouri’s St. Louis-anchored 1st Congressional District. She lost the seat in 2024 after serving one term.

In Michigan — which also holds its primary August 4 — the DSA is training firepower on multiple races in a state that will help determine control of the House.

One week later, Wisconsin holds its August 11 primary. DSA-backed state Rep. Francesca Hong is rising in a crowded field to succeed retiring Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.

“It’s a great day to be a democratic socialist,” Hong posted on X after the New York City victories. “Wisconsin is next!”

The New York Shockwaves

Three far-left candidates heavily supported by socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani pulled off stunning upsets in the June primary.

Congressional candidates Claire Valdez, Brad Lander and Darializa Avila Chevalier and Mayor Zohran Mamdani raise their hands during a Get Out the Vote rally at King’s Theater on June 18, 2026, in New York City.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, a DSA member also backed by Justice Democrats, ousted incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat, chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in New York’s 13th District.

The community organizer — who created controversy with past comments and anti-Israel rhetoric — is now the overwhelming favorite in the Democrat-dominated district covering northern Manhattan and the Bronx.

Brad Lander, the former New York City comptroller supported by Mamdani and the Working Families Party, ousted incumbent Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District. Lander is the clear favorite in the deep-blue district covering lower Manhattan and northwestern Brooklyn.

Claire Valdez, a state lawmaker endorsed by the DSA, won the primary to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez in a district spanning parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Valdez topped Velázquez-backed Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.

The Denver Upset That Started It All

Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old attorney and first-time candidate backed by the DSA, Justice Democrats, and Working Families Party, toppled 15-term Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado’s June primary.

Democratic congressional candidate Melat Kiros speaks to supporters at an election-night watch party after winning the Colorado primary on June 30, 2026, in Denver, Colorado.
DeGette had represented Denver’s 1st Congressional District for 30 years. Kiros is now on a glide path to Washington in the Democrat-dominated district.

During the primary, Kiros faced scrutiny over past comments suggesting American foreign policy made the 9/11 terror attacks “inevitable.”

The Squad Expands

Among the 19 far-left incumbents seeking re-election, the most visible is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who burst onto the national stage eight years ago by ousting then-House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley.

The four-term progressive from New York City — best known by her acronym AOC — is the most visible member of the Squad. She is backed by the DSA, Justice Democrats, and Working Families Party.

Ocasio-Cortez is eyeing a potential 2028 White House bid or a possible challenge to longtime Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer.

Other Squad members seeking re-election include Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan — all backed by Justice Democrats and frequently targeted by President Trump.

The California Intra-Party Fights

Several far-left challengers are taking on Democratic incumbents in California’s nonpartisan primary system, where the top two finishers advance regardless of party.

Mai Vang, a Sacramento city councilor backed by Working Families Party and Justice Democrats, slightly edged Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui in the June primary. The two will face off again in November for the solidly blue seat.

Angela Gonzales-Torres, backed by Justice Democrats and Working Families Party, advanced to the general election and is now facing incumbent Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez in the Los Angeles-anchored 34th District.

Connie Chan, a San Francisco Board of Supervisors member endorsed by Working Families Party, is running to succeed retiring former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She’ll face state Sen. Scott Wiener in November in the heavily blue district.

The Swing-District Gambles

Not all far-left candidates are running in safe blue seats. Several Working Families Party-backed candidates are challenging Republicans in swing districts that will determine House control.

Bob Brooks, a retired firefighter handpicked by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, won the May primary in Pennsylvania’s 7th District. He’s challenging incumbent GOP Rep. Ryan Mackenzie in a race among two or three dozen that will decide the House majority.

Randy Villegas, a school board trustee backed by Working Families Party, came in second to Republican Rep. David Valadao in California’s June primary and advanced to the general election in the crucial swing district.

The Controversial Picks

Some far-left nominees carry baggage heading into November.

Adam Hamawy, a plastic surgeon and former U.S. Army combat surgeon backed by Justice Democrats, won the New Jersey primary for the 12th District. Hamawy grabbed national attention in 2024 as part of a volunteer medical team in Gaza unable to leave after Israel closed border crossings during its war with Hamas.

Dr. Adam Hamawy speaks during an interview in Washington, D.C., on June 14, 2024, after meetings at the White House and on Capitol Hill.
During the primary campaign, Hamawy’s past ties to a convicted terrorist who was convicted of seditious conspiracy linked to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing resurfaced, according to Fox News reporting.

Rep. LaMonica McIver, a Working Families Party-backed lawmaker representing northern New Jersey, drew national attention last year when she was among Democrats attempting a congressional oversight visit to an ICE facility in Newark. McIver was later indicted by a grand jury for “forcibly impeding and interfering with federal officers” during the visit. She has disputed the charges as political.

The November Test

The real verdict comes in November when these far-left candidates face Republican opposition and discover whether their message resonates beyond deep-blue primaries.

President Trump and Vice President JD Vance have already issued sharp warnings about the socialist surge within the Democratic Party.

Chief congressional correspondent Chad Pergram reported the Kiros victory in Denver marked the 27th progressive primary victory this cycle — a number that could grow significantly with Missouri, Michigan, and Wisconsin primaries still ahead.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., warned that a “hammer-and-sickle wave” is taking over the Democratic Party — and what’s happening in New York and Michigan primaries right now is a preview of the 2028 presidential race.

“You get this hammer-and-sickle wave we saw in New York — that is not going to be an isolated incident,” Schmitt told Fox News Digital. “That is a flashing red light. It is a red flag.”

“Their primaries now are going to be dominated by these people who want to go to war with Western civilization. I mean, I’m not making this up, this is what they say they want to do. And so their [2028] presidential primary will be defined by this ideology.”

Several insurgent progressive and far-left candidates have toppled more moderate Democratic incumbents in primary contests during this midterm election cycle.

In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s chosen candidates made a clean sweep in June. Two incumbents, Reps. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., and Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., were defeated by progressives with the Mamdani stamp of approval — Brad Lander and Darializa Avila Chevalier, respectively.

In Michigan, one of the most notable far-left candidates is Abdul El-Sayed, who is locked in a messy primary fight with Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., for a Senate seat.

Schmitt contended that Democrats’ position on immigration is driving the party’s hard-left turn.

“I think they’ve just decided that their only chance of being successful electorally is through their immigration policy, and so, they’ve completely dismissed the arguments of Bill Clinton and even Harry Reid,” Schmitt said.

Senate Democrats are now bucking an old policy once championed by former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. In the 1990s, Reid pushed legislation that would have changed birthright citizenship — just like how Schmitt and other Republicans are doing now after the Supreme Court’s decision upholding birthright citizenship earlier this month.

Schmitt said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who was mentored by Reid, is on notice by his own party given how far left the political winds are blowing.

His main political adversary could be one of the poster children of the progressive movement: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

“Chuck Schumer, if he survives to even be minority leader again, you know, next term, there’s just no way he’s not going to have a primary challenge by AOC or somebody else.”

“I mean, I think he’s probably going to chair the ‘AOC for president campaign’ so … she doesn’t run against him, but there’s going to be somebody else,” Schmitt said. “And the money and the energy on the Democrat side right now are these radical leftist communists.”

The left has lurched so far into radicalism that the specific candidate no longer matters in key Senate races, Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters told Breitbart News Daily this week.

Gruters was discussing Michigan’s Senate primary, where socialist candidate Abdul El-Sayed is vying for the Democratic nomination. Host Mike Slater asked whether Republicans should worry about El-Sayed winning, given the success of far-left Democrats in states like New York.

“Here’s the deal, even if it’s not El-Sayed, the left is so far to the left, it doesn’t matter what the candidate is anymore.”

Gruters said both Democratic candidates in Michigan would be disasters for President Trump’s agenda.

“El-Sayed has more things that he said in the past, but both candidates are disasters. Both would be terrible for the president and working to push his agenda forward,” Gruters said. “And so, yes, I don’t care who the nominee is.”

Still, the RNC chair believes El-Sayed would be the easier opponent for Republican Mike Rogers to defeat.

Gruters warned that Republicans cannot afford to lose the midterms — the stakes are existential.

“We need Mike Rogers to win. We need to win the midterms. We don’t have an option of not winning. We have to win. We have to send up more MAGA warriors wherever, because seriously, if we don’t pass the Save America Act with the president we have, if we don’t get rid of the filibuster, they’re going to do it when they have control, and game’s over for us,” he said.

Gruters emphasized that Republicans must secure elections now or Democrats will weaponize the filibuster the moment they regain power.

The RNC chair also addressed the tight Georgia Senate race, where Republican Mike Collins faces Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff.

“Ossoff has $80 million. We’re out there raising the money, trying to help Collins be successful, but that’s a very difficult race. Georgia should be a Republican state,” Gruters said.

He explained Georgia’s late primary put Republicans at a disadvantage compared to states like Michigan and New Hampshire, where early endorsements allowed the party to build war chests and obliterate the opposition.

“It’s not a layup. It’s not a free throw. It’s a three-point shot. We’ve got to win,” Gruters said. “We have a great candidate, but we’ve got to come together now.”

The seat is winnable, Gruters concluded, but victory will take massive effort and resources.

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed spent his entire campaign denying he ever backed defunding the police. Now video from five years ago shows him asking, “Do police really need to use guns?” and questioning why taxpayers fund “people with guns” instead of anti-poverty programs.

The footage directly contradicts El-Sayed’s repeated claims that he never embraced the “defund the police” movement.

El-Sayed is the progressive front-runner in Michigan’s Democratic primary, running against Rep. Haley Stevens for the seat held by retiring Sen. Gary Peters. Republicans see the seat as a prime pickup opportunity in the 2026 midterms.

“Why are we investing so much in people with guns and less in people with the means of being able to invest in young folks, empower folks through their livelihoods, and empower them to live their best lives?”

The video, published by the University of Michigan in 2020 and titled “Systemic Racism as a Public Health Issue,” shows El-Sayed arguing that police funding and use of force constituted a public health crisis rooted in systemic racism.

“Do police really need to use guns? Do we need as much of a police force?” El-Sayed continued in the clip. “And so, if we ask ourselves about how we spend money in the public, where that money goes, where it comes from, we need to make a lot better decisions about investing in the things that root out poverty, rather than investing in policing poverty.”

The video follows a CNN report that found El-Sayed leaned into the defund-the-police movement during its 2020 peak. In a June 2020 interview with Detroit Public Radio, El-Sayed claimed he never directly called to “defund the police” but said the principles behind the movement were hard to express in a tweet.

“So, you’ll note, I didn’t say ‘defund the police,’ I just described what needed to be done,” El-Sayed said at the time. “Defunding the police is disinvesting in the means of incarcerating someone or killing them on the streets and investing more in the means of educating and empowering and engaging communities.”

He tried to rebrand his stance as “refunding” the police to stop taxpayer dollars from flowing to “buy war materiel to wage war in our streets.”

El-Sayed’s campaign spokesperson told Fox News Digital that his views have become “more nuanced” after working with law enforcement as director of Health, Human, and Veterans Services for Wayne County, Michigan.

“One simple word has never been enough to fully explain the reforms we need for a challenge as complex as our criminal legal system,” spokesperson Roxie Richner said.

She added that El-Sayed now supports improving law enforcement recruitment and funding while rejecting “militarized policing” and backing community violence intervention programs.

But the candidate can’t shake his old positions. During a recent CNN interview with Kasie Hunt, El-Sayed admitted he deleted his old tweets supporting the movement “because I didn’t want them to be taken out of context like this.”

“I deleted all the tweets, because I didn’t want them to be taken out of context like this.”

El-Sayed dismissed the scrutiny as “clickbait in D.C.” and said voters in Michigan don’t ask him about it on the streets.

“I think this debate about 2020 and the ways that tweets are going to play are really nice on CNN if you want to get clicks,” El-Sayed told Hunt. “They’re not that effective, and nobody really asks me about them on the streets or in communities in Michigan.”

El-Sayed is backed by progressive heavyweights including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He’s part of the progressive wave flooding into the Democratic Party ahead of the 2026 midterms.

The Michigan Senate primary is one of the most consequential races of the cycle. Republicans are eyeing the seat as a must-win pickup opportunity in their push to expand their Senate majority.

Sen. Elissa Slotkin just told Democrats what everyone already knows: the party is broken.

The Michigan Democrat appeared on SiriusXM’s “Straight Shooter” this week and delivered a brutal assessment of her party’s direction after getting crushed in the 2024 elections.

“Every day there’s a debate within the party about the path forward,” Slotkin told host Stephen A. Smith. “That’s why I believe we need significant new leadership. The old models are no longer working, and that includes the Democratic Party.”

“The old models are no longer working, and that includes the Democratic Party.”

Slotkin admitted Democrats tried to be everything to everyone and ended up standing for nothing. She said the party scattered its focus across too many priorities while Trump kept his message dead simple.

“Democrats were soundly defeated in 2024. I was in a swing state, and I won that same year. To me, the lesson was simple. Democrats had too many priorities,” she said. “When you prioritize everything, no one knows what you actually stand for.”

She contrasted that with Trump’s approach: one clear message about making life more affordable and putting money back in Americans’ pockets.

“Donald Trump came in with one clear message. He said, ‘I’m going to make your life more affordable. I’m going to put more money in your pocket.’ He won because he kept his message simple and focused on the issue Americans cared most about,” Slotkin added.

Slotkin called for fresh leadership in both the House and Senate. Her comments come as Democratic socialists racked up primary wins in New York this week, backed by NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

DNC Chair Ken Martin has tried calming internal tensions since taking over in February 2025, but Slotkin suggested band-aids won’t fix this. The party needs wholesale change.

A group of Democratic senators already tried replacing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer over his handling of last year’s government shutdown, according to The Wall Street Journal. Senate Democrats will vote on party leadership after November’s general election through secret ballot.

The charges remain allegations. The case has not been proven in court.

President Donald Trump issued his full endorsement of U.S. Rep. John James for Michigan governor on Monday — and within hours, a major Republican rival dropped out of the primary race.

Trump delivered the stamp of approval via Truth Social, declaring James has his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”

“IT IS MY GREAT HONOR TO ENDORSE AMERICA FIRST CONGRESSMAN, JOHN JAMES, WHO IS RUNNING TO BECOME THE NEXT GOVERNOR OF THE BEAUTIFUL STATE OF MICHIGAN! JOHN JAMES HAS MY COMPLETE AND TOTAL ENDORSEMENT TO BE THE NEXT GOVERNOR OF MICHIGAN — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!”

James responded, calling Trump “The greatest President of my lifetime.”

The endorsement triggered an immediate shakeup.

Michigan state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt suspended his campaign the same day and threw his support behind James.

“This campaign has always been about the people of Michigan and standing with President Trump to defeat the Democrats in November,” Nesbitt said. “Today, I am suspending my campaign and proudly joining President Trump in endorsing John James as Michigan’s next Governor.”

Nesbitt added: “A divided primary only helps Democrats. It’s time to unite.”

James praised Nesbitt’s decision, posting on X that Nesbitt “did exactly what a true Michigan CONSERVATIVE should do: He united behind the President and our mission to Save Michigan from the Libs and the RINOs destroying our Republic!”

Not everyone in the primary rolled over.

Businessman Perry Johnson fired back, claiming Trump “received bad advice yet again.”

“John James is a two-time statewide loser, and Michigan has already seen this movie before,” Johnson posted, citing past Trump-backed Michigan candidates who lost general elections.

Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox also stayed in the race, asserting he’s “won Michigan twice by building a coalition of working Michiganders.”

Cox said he donated thousands to Trump’s campaigns and served as Trump’s election integrity lawyer in Michigan in 2024. “I look forward to being President Trump’s favorite Governor when I win,” Cox posted.

The Michigan Republican gubernatorial primary is August 5, 2026.

ABC News anchor Linsey Davis — who is set to serve as a moderator for next month’s presidential debate between Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump — linked Trump to the KKK during a segment at the Democratic National Convention on Monday.

The comments came when Davis was interviewing Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a co-chair of the Harris-Walz Campaign.

“As you know, former President Donald Trump is expected to go campaign in Howell, Michigan, tomorrow. Many people are aware that a month ago, in Howell, KKK protesters marched in the streets with the white robes on and suggested that they support Donald Trump,” Davis said. “I’m curious if you make anything about that connection and him going in particularly to Howell tomorrow.”

VOTE NOW: Do you blame BIDEN or TRUMP for the crashing economy?

Equally bad in Enten’s estimation is the Harris campaign’s naive hope that enthusiasm around her nascent bid will translate into electoral success in November. Spokespersons have pointed to a shift in battleground state polls showing Harris running significantly ahead of where President Joe Biden stood before he dropped out. “That enthusiasm is not the same thing as going out to actually vote, and there’s a different question [in the survey] which says, how certain are you that you’re actually going to go out and vote?” In fact, he adds, the number of Harris voters who say they are “almost certain” to vote now sits at 61%, just shy of the 62% of Biden supporters who said the same back in May. In contrast, the percentage of President Trump’s supporters who say the same has risen in that time to 60% from 58%.

Harris will be hoping to maintain her dominance in the media cycle at next week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago where she will formally become the party’s nominee. Officials are preparing for a riotous series of protestors who continue to push progressives to vote “uncommitted” in November, a signal that their anti-Israel movement hasn’t changed with the rise of Harris who they still hold responsible for President Biden’s positions.

Vice President Kamala Harris once again deviated from her normal speaking voice and instead went with somewhat of a cross between an urban and southern accent during a campaign rally in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday.

Harris and her newly-minted running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, were in Michigan for their second rally of the day on Wednesday after addressing supporters in Wisconsin earlier in the afternoon. While Harris was speaking about the politically motivated cases against former President Donald Trump, she once again appeared to be speaking in a southern accent.

“Here’s the thing; the courts are gonna handle dat, we got’ beat em’ in Novemba. We got’ beat em’ in November,” Harris told the crowd.

(ALERT: This Is The Handshake That Will Collapse The US Dollar)

Harris — the daughter of Indian and Jamaican parents who spent much of her upbringing in Canada — has a history of speaking with bizarre accents that are not her own while on the campaign trail.

In Atlanta earlier this month, Harris spoke with a southern accent during a campaign rally in Atlanta that began just after a Megan Thee Stallion concert. “And you all helped us win in 2020, and we gon’ do it again in 2024,” the vice president declared with a southern twang.

While addressing voters ahead of the Georgia Senate runoff elections in 2020, Harris spoke with some sort of southern drawl while speaking in Columbus. “We’re looking across the country at so much devastation. People who have lost family members, lost time being able to go to work, lost time in terms of our children’s education and the days of their education they have missed,” then Vice President-elect Harris told supporters while frequently pausing as if she were giving a sermon.

Harris’ spontaneous southern accent has also surfaced during campaign events in North Carolina and Washington D.C.

A super PAC funded in part by Elon Musk and dedicated to supporting former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign is in the crosshairs of Democratic officials who are using its prominence to draw attention to “dark money” in the presidential election.

CNBC first reported on an investigation by Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson into Musk’s multi-million donations to America PAC even though neither she nor elected Democrats could point to any specific laws the third-party group has broken. Musk publicly endorsed Trump following the July 13th assassination attempt against him. Additionally, he pledged to donate upwards of $45 million per month to groups like America PAC that would support Trump’s reelection. The X owner and founder of Tesla and SpaceX has a net worth of $225 million and is far and away the richest individual in the world.

(VOTE: Are You Supporting TRUMP Or KAMALA In November?)

The group’s focus has been on registering voters nationwide but puts a special emphasis on collecting data from voters in battleground states. Those who live in states such as Georgia, Pennsylvania, or Arizona and visit the PAC’s website will be asked to share contact information like email addresses and cell phone numbers, while others from solidly red or blue states will be directed to a more generic form asking them to register to vote. In Michigan, where Trump is neck-and-neck with Vice President Kamala Harris, residents are asked to enter everything from their phone number and email address to their zip code.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Benson said the office is probing the PAC to determine if voter data is being used and disclosed properly. “Every citizen should know exactly how their personal information is being used by PACs, especially if an entity is claiming it will help people register to vote in Michigan or any other state,” a spokeswoman for the Michigan secretary of state’s office said in a statement to CNBC. “While the America PAC is a federal political action committee, the Department is reviewing their activities to determine if there have been any violations of state law. We will refer potential violations to the Michigan Attorney General’s office as appropriate.”

A person familiar with the inner workings of America PAC told the outlet that there have been some discrepancies about the function of buttons on its website and that the group plans to update the site soon. They added that the group does not directly register voters in swing states. Experts who spoke with CNBC said they did not see any signs of potential lawbreaking. Barbara McQuade, former U.S. Attorney for Michigan’s eastern district, said “I am not aware of any laws being broken.” Mary Massaron, a partner at law firm Plunkett Cooney, could not point to any specific violations but urged the PAC to be more transparent about its data collection efforts. “It is very troubling for any candidate or PAC funded project to deliberately fail to provide information or a link to register to vote when someone asks because they would potentially vote for the opposing candidates,” Massaron said in an email.

The Republican National Committee has sued Benson at least twice, once for “secretly attempting to circumvent Michigan’s absentee voting safeguards,” according to the GOP, and a second time in connection with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s efforts to expand the number state agencies who could assist with voter registration.
