The tactic — running a candidate with an identical or nearly-identical name to an incumbent — has been used in multiple states to siphon votes from legitimate candidates. Critics call it voter confusion by design.

Alaska uses ranked-choice voting, which can amplify the impact of name-similarity tactics. A voter scanning the ballot for “Dan Sullivan” could easily mark the wrong candidate, especially if they don’t notice the middle initial.

Lee’s involvement suggests coordination. Democratic operatives have in the past recruited same-name candidates in Florida, where ghost candidates have been charged with election fraud for running solely to split the vote.

Sen. Sullivan has served Alaska since 2015. He won re-election in 2020 and is not up for re-election until 2026. The timing of Dan J. Sullivan’s candidacy announcement — and the Democratic fingerprints on the press release — has raised alarms among Republican observers.

The Alaska Republican Party has not yet commented publicly on the Dan J. Sullivan candidacy. The state’s ranked-choice voting system, adopted in 2020, has already generated controversy for enabling scenarios where second-place candidates can win.

The charges remain allegations. The case has not been proven in court.
