LeBron James-Backed I Promise School Delivers Disastrous Test Results – Daily Political Newswire – The Conservative

Several years back, NBA legend LeBron James embarked on a significant charitable mission. He sought to positively impact the lives of vulnerable students and their families in his hometown, Akron, Ohio.

The I Promise School, established as part of the Akron Public Schools system in 2018, aimed to facilitate this mission. However, the school has seen a significant passage of time since the last instance of its eighth-grade fall class students achieving passing marks in Ohio’s math test, as per a report by the Akron Beacon Journal.

The report indicates that the last time these students succeeded in the state’s math test was when they were in the third grade. An official from Akron Public Schools termed these test results as “discouraging.”

“It is discouraging,” Keith Liechty-Clifford, the district’s director of school improvement said.

As stated on its website, the I Promise School’s mission is to aid students who are lagging and at risk of being overlooked or neglected.

Despite its status as a public school, the I Promise School operates in collaboration with the LeBron James Family Foundation. It gets the same local, state, and federal funds as any other public institution of its kind.

However, reported instances of subpar student performance have raised alarms among some officials within the Akron school system.

On Monday, the LeBron James Family Foundation issued a statement asserting its unwavering commitment to its mission.

“When we started this work to wraparound students through education, we entered this partnership with Akron Public School for the long haul,” the statement said.

“Because this work requires a long-term commitment, hard work, and a lot of love and care. And that’s what we bring each and every day because the I Promise School is more than a school. We’re here for the ups and downs, and will continue to wraparound our students and their entire families so they can be successful in school and in life, no matter the challenges and obstacles that come their way.”

A new principal will be brought in for the new school year at I Promise.
