Donald Trump sunk the speaker bid of GOP Rep Tom Emmer.
Republicans then went and named a new GOP Speaker-Designate.
They named Representative Mike Johnson as GOP Speaker-Designate.
Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA 4th District), vice chair of the House GOP conference, has been named the GOP Speaker-Designate.
The announcement came after a closed-door meeting among House Republicans, where Johnson emerged as the consensus candidate.
The race for the House Speaker position within the Republican Party took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when Tom Emmer (MN) abruptly withdrew his candidacy. The move came just hours after former President Donald Trump blasted Emmer in a scathing post on Truth Social, his social media platform. Emmer’s withdrawal has opened the floodgates for a new batch of GOP lawmakers who have thrown their hats into the ring.
Donald Trump reacted to the news by saying that the GOP now has 5 candidates who are beyond reproach.
He said that he would not be making an endorsement but that his strong suggestion would be to vote for the leading candidate.

It gave us a quick and easy way forward with 5 candidates who are beyond reproach, and represent the absolute best there is in the Republican Party. Byron Donalds (Florida), Charles J. “Chuck” Fleischmann (Tennessee), Mark Green (Tennessee), & Roger Williams (Texas), & the ultimate winner of yesterday’s vote, by a significant margin, Mike Johnson (Louisiana).
