A federal judge has sided with 16 Republican state attorneys general in ruling that the Biden-Harris administration overreached by attempting to extend protections for illegal immigrants living in the U.S.

The decision, handed down late Monday, threatens to derail an initiative to shield immigrants married to U.S. citizens but who entered unlawfully, a category that President Joe Biden believes should be exempt from increased deportation proceedings if former President Donald Trump wins in November’s election. Judge J. Campbell Barker of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas issued an administrative stay that stops the government from approving applications for asylum which began last week, the New York Times reported. The 67-page decision is a vindicating win for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and a consortium of Republican law enforcers who argued that the Biden-Harris administration does not have the authority to bypass Congress and set its own immigration policy. “The claims are substantial and warrant closer consideration than the court has been able to afford to date,” concurred Judge Barker, who was appointed by former President Donald J. Trump.

Going forward, the Department of Homeland Security may accept applications for the asylum program but may not process them under a stay that has been set at 14 days with the option to be expanded. The program, known as Keeping Families Together, was implemented on August 19th. It has drawn sharp criticism from Republicans who claimed that the president has effectively proposed “amnesty” on illegal immigrants who married U.S. citizens. Other requirements include that the individuals have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years, with DHS saying that the average recipient of the program has been in the country for 23 years. Under current law, immigrants who marry citizens but enter unlawfully must return to their country of origin and wait while their expedited request for citizenship is processed.

Instead of amnesty, the Biden DHS refers to the program as “parole” for asylum seekers, shielding them from deportation and authorizing them to seek employment. Once they obtain legal permanent residency, they may pursue citizenship. That, however, isn’t good enough for immigration advocates who ripped Judge Barker’s decision. “It is bad for the economy and against human decency to prevent people who have been here working and paying taxes, often for more than 20 years, and married to U.S. citizens, from obtaining legal status more quickly,” said Rebecca Shi, the executive director of the American Business Immigration Coalition.

Other state attorneys general who joined Paxton in the suit were those of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wyoming. Together, they argued the change in policy, the largest since former President Barack Obama’s protections for DREAMers, was implemented “for blatant political purposes” in an election year. President Biden, and by extension Vice President Harris, have contended that the intent was to preserve family unification. Harris, as the administration’s “border czar” — a title which mainstream media outlets have since scrubbed from their reporting — has taken substantial flak for millions of illegal crossings that have occurred during her time in office.

Despite the bonhomie of the party’s convention, all is not well under the progressive tent. Anti-Israel rioters outside the Chicago stadium managed to breach security gates and attack officers before being handcuffed while thousands more accused President Biden of complicity in “genocide” against Palestinians. “Biden you can’t hide. We charge you with genocide” was one of the chants overheard by Politico ringing out during the early hours of the convention. Security personnel told the outlet that President Biden was touring the facility at the time and the breach did not pose a major security risk.

The platform traditionally plays host to shared policy statements, goals, and values for both the Republican and Democratic Parties and are adopted or revamped during presidential elections. Delegates on the floor at this week’s Democratic convention are expected to endorse motions including expanded protections for transgender Americans and calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war. Embarrassing oversights list Biden as the party’s champion on cancer research, infrastructure investments, and increases taxes on corporations.

President Biden is expected to speak in front of the convention on Monday in what Politico reports will be a “hero’s sendoff” after being nudged out of the race by other top Democrats like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), former President Barack Obama, and others. A lawsuit against the Justice Department by a conservative law group has led to the discovery of transcripts between President Joe Biden and his ghostwriter, offering a new window into how the president regarded the classified documents in his possession that were the subject of a thorough investigation by special counsel Robert Hur.

The suit, according to Fox News, was brought by the Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project, a transparency organization suing the DOJ to produce transcripts of Hur’s discussions with Biden where he infamously referred to the 81-year-old as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has rebuffed requests for the unedited video or audio productions of the interviews, claiming opponents of President Biden only intended to use them for political purposes. Oversight Project counsel Kyle Brosnan said Wednesday that the DOJ recently informed the court about the existence of 117 pages of notes taken by ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer as he prepared to produce an autobiography about the Democratic incumbent.

“There do exist written transcripts of President Biden’s interviews with his ghostwriter where they discuss classified material, and Special Counsel Hur relied upon those written transcripts in coming to his conclusions [that Biden was a ‘well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory’],” Brosnan wrote in a filing referencing notes taken by Zwonitzer during his production of the 2017 book “Promise Me, Dad.” The conservative watchdog added, “The discovery of those materials has been the subject of a lot of back-and-forth between us and the Justice Department about how we want to proceed. We’re trying to figure out how that discovery impacts the case and kind of what the next steps are there.”

The revelation contradicts the DOJ’s assertion back in June that no written record existed documenting discussions between Biden and Zwonitzer. Howell “questioned this representation,” the DOJ admitted, ironically pointing to the attorney’s own citation of a footnote in the DOJ’s filing that appeared to reference a Biden-Zwonitzer transcript. The DOJ took it from there, questioning investigators who couldn’t recall the transcript and ultimately reaching out to Hur, who told them one existed. Now the DOJ and Oversight Project will begin the discussions as to how and how much evidence can be turned over for public scrutiny. “There’s over 70 hours of tapes between Biden and Zwonitzer. So, that’s obviously a lot of material that’s going to take the Justice Department a long time to process,” Brosnan said.

On X, the Oversight Project noted that the state attorney general whose precedent was cited by Garland in asserting executive privilege over the Biden-Hur tapes was incorrect in his reasoning.

The rushed exit of Afghanistan by American troops in 2021 included the death of 13 service members at the Baghdad airport when a suicide bomber detonated their vest in a crowd of hundreds scrambling to board the final planes leaving the tarmac. Tragic scenes of locals clinging to the wheels of departing aircraft circulated around the globe, forcing President Biden to defend his reasons for pushing for a hasty departure. Vice President Harris stood by his decisions, previously telling CNN’s Dana Bash that she was the “last person in the room” with Biden as he weighed the pros and cons of a pullout.

Officials with the office of special counsel David Weiss indicated on Wednesday that Hunter Biden was working at the direction of a wealthy Romanian oligarch who hired him to influence his father and the White House on policies that would be beneficial, a reminder that the embattled first son’s criminal matters won’t be disappearing just because President Joe Biden isn’t running for reelection.

The Romanian businessman hired Hunter to “influence U.S. government agencies” while his father still served as vice president, prosecutors alleged in filings obtained by ABC News. The disclosure marks the closest authorities have come in tying the president to potential criminal activity by his family. In his tax fraud case, Hunter is claimed to have been hired by Gabriel Popoviciu who at the time was facing a corruption trial in his home country. The government, Weiss’s deputies wrote, will “introduce the evidence … that [Hunter Biden] and Business Associate 1 received compensation from a foreign principal who was attempting to influence U.S. policy and public opinion and cause the United States to investigate the Romanian investigation of [Popoviciu] in Romania.”

In addition, they write, evidence suggests that Hunter and Popoviciu “were concerned that lobbying work might cause political ramifications for the defendant’s father” and that they structured their business agreement in a way to “conceal the true nature of the work [Hunter] was performing.” The deal proved fruitful; between 2015 and 2017, Hunter split more than $3 million earned from Popoviciu between himself and two other business partners. Now, he faces three counts of felony tax charges and additional misdemeanors with some stemming from the business agreement. A total of $1.4 million was previously paid back by Biden’s attorney Kevin Morris to compensate for sums owed for work performed between 2016 and 2020.

Curiously, Weiss stopped short of charging Hunter with violating laws that would have required him to register as a foreign agent attempting to influence American policy, an allegation that critics of President Biden have floated as another potential wrongdoing. Prosecutor David Hines wrote in the filings that his office does not plan to assert that Hunter “improperly coordinated with the Obama administration” but will go right up to the line as part of a bare-knuckle legal strategy. The New York Times added that Weiss will rely on testimony from a Hunter Biden business associate who stated that “political ramifications” were considered as part of the group’s decision to stop Hunter from registering under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA.

Weiss has already scored a conviction against Hunter Biden on charges that he was actively using hard drugs when he purchased a handgun in 2018, violating federal laws. The embattled first son has openly struggled with drug addiction and jeopardized himself when prosecutors used his own words from a 2021 memoir in which he claims to have been heavily smoking crack cocaine at the time he purchased the weapon. Defense attorney have sought to dismiss charges related to business deals done during the period in time, including with Popviciu, citing Hunter’s addiction.

Following the 2022 elections, the powerful California Democrat announced she would be stepping back from the party’s House leadership, though she remains an influential force in the 2024 cycle. She, along with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and former President Barack Obama are all believed to have encouraged Biden to step aside, putting Harris on a glide path to the Democratic Party’s nomination earlier this week.

Her resignation from party leadership came a month after a man broke into her San Francisco home and attacked her husband with a hammer while he slept. Paul Pelosi was admitted to a hospital with severe head injuries following the attack by a conspiracy theorist who was later sentenced to 30 years in prison. Alexandria Pelosi, the couple’s daughter and a documentary filmmaker, said the brush with death was a wake-up call for her mother about the importance of family. “Was this all worth it? A clueless President Joe Biden made a gaffe for the ages on Thursday night as he and Vice President Kamala Harris arrived on the tarmac to greet Americans recently freed from their years-long imprisonment overseas.

The arrival of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan was greeted with ecstasy by senior administration officials who coordinated the largest prison swap with Russia and Germany since the end of the Soviet regime. Whelan had been imprisoned since 2018 after Russian authorities convicted him of espionage-related charges, and Gershkovich had been serving a 16-year sentence since being convicted 17 months ago for similar false crimes. Both men were supposed to be welcomed with open arms by the president and vice president, a feel-good photo op that quickly went from bad to worse.

A clip of the men’s arrival showed President Biden standing at the base of the plane shortly before the two men put their feet on American soil for the first time in years. Shortly before they disembarked from the aircraft, Biden wandered away to speak with a man and woman who appeared to be family members of one of the men. He kept his back turned to Gershkovich and Whelan as the rest of the crowd applauded their appearance, and even Vice President Harris managed to stay in character long enough to briefly hug the journalist.

Harris and the two Secret Service agents come together and watch the president disappear as if he were taking the private jet to the next leg of its nonexistent journey.

Despite the president’s bizarre behavior, administration officials had the opportunity to tout a long-sought foreign policy win that was kept in the limelight by the Journal’s continued coverage of its own reporter long after he faded from public consciousness. Two years earlier, President Biden celebrated the return of WNBA star Brittney Griner after she spent more than two years in a Russian detention center on a marijuana-related conviction. At least five Russian nationals were released as part of the deal which included some imprisoned in Germany. Among them were a millionaire implicated in a hacking scandal, a convicted murderer, and several men with ties to Russian intelligence services.

Former President Donald Trump ripped the White House’s deal on Thursday in an angry Truth Social post, claiming he would have accomplished the exchange without giving anything in return to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Are we releasing murderers, killers, or thugs? Just curious because we never make good deals, at anything, but especially hostage swaps. Our ‘negotiators’ are always an embarrassment to us! I got back many hostages, and gave the opposing Country NOTHING – and never any cash. To do so is bad precedent for the future. That’s the way it should be, or this situation will get worse and worse.”

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby disputed Trump’s characterization on CNN. “The previous administration also conducted prisoner exchanges. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) has received a new code name from the Secret Service agents assigned to his detail, one that holds a special meaning to him.

The Daily Mail reported that agents will begin referring to Trump’s vice presidential pick as “Bobcat” after offering Vance the opportunity to pick his own code name from a list of options. The name change comes two and a half weeks after former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt and prompted the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. While high-value individuals protected by the department are often named internally on “sheer whim,” according to one source, Vance in this case was afforded his own chance to select a historic code name.

“Bobcat” is a throwback to Vance’s autobiography “Hillbilly Elegy” in which the conservative lawmaker describes growing up in Middletown, Ohio, and later attending school at Breathitt County High School in Jackson, Kentucky whose mascot is the Bobcats. In addition, Vance has a love for football and his alma mater shares its mascot with Ohio University, though he graduated from Ohio State.

Codenames are unique to each individual and stay with them throughout the duration of their protection. In the case of President Trump, he will be referred to as “Mogul” by the agents who stay by his side for the rest of his life. He originally requested to be codenamed “Humble” and former First Lady Melania Trump came to be known by agents as “Muse.” Key to the nicknames is keeping them short, distinct, and easy to pronounce for agents as they work quickly in the field and were once central to keeping wayward listeners in the dark about who was being discussed on their radio channels. Today agents’ communication is encrypted and the codenames are largely a formality.

On Monday, President Joe Biden signaled his firm support for congressional efforts to enforce new rules on U.S. Supreme Court justices, which critics say amounts to a power grab by Democrats to limit the judicial freedom of the court’s conservative majority.

Fox News reported on Biden’s remarks, echoed by Vice President Kamala Harris, calling for all justices to abide by a new code of ethics and a term limit of 18 years. Biden, who announced the news in a Washington Post op-ed, also indicated he wants to pass a new law limiting presidential immunity in the wake of the court’s decision granting sweeping authority to presidents taking official acts in office. He will expand on those proposals during remarks later in the day at the LBJ Presidential Library, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

“I served as a U.S. senator for 36 years, including as chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. I have overseen more Supreme Court nominations as senator, vice president and president than anyone living today,” Biden wrote in the Post. “I have great respect for our institutions and separation of powers. What is happening now is not normal, and it undermines the public’s confidence in the court’s decisions, including those impacting personal freedoms. We now stand in a breach,” Biden wrote.

Central to the Biden reforms is the elimination of freedom by sitting presidents to commit crimes while in office. Hanging over the proposal is the specter of former President Donald Trump being prosecuted for mishandling classified documents and encouraging the January 6th, 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol. Both elements of Biden’s plans were supported by Harris in a statement. “Today, there is a clear crisis of confidence facing the Supreme Court as its fairness has been called into question after numerous ethics scandals and decision after decision overturning long-standing precedent,” she said.

According to the Biden plan, once all incoming justices have been appointed under the 18-year limit, a president would have the ability to fill a court opening every two years. The plan faces nearly impossible odds of being implemented as the Supreme Court’s lifetime appointments are enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and were intended to keep the justices free from political influence or focused on a future after the bench. Meanwhile, Biden’s ethics rule would require that all justices “disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity, and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest.”

“President Biden and Vice President Harris look forward to working with Congress and empowering the American people to prevent the abuse of Presidential power, restore faith in the Supreme Court, and strengthen the guardrails of democracy,” a White House official said in a statement to Fox News.

Critics of the high court have kicked their complaints into overdrive since the 2022 undoing of Roe v. Wade, a watershed moment for conservatives that has come to define the modern slant of the court following three appointments by President Trump. A series of investigations have tied conservative Justice Clarence Thomas to high-net-worth individuals with business before the court, prompting questions about whether he was influenced by private trips and personal gifts. Supporters of Thomas have pushed back and cited efforts by staffers to liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor to have university administrators purchase large quantities of her autobiography before she came to their campuses for speaking engagements.
