Former Trump Administration Trade Advisor Peter Navarro received a lengthy standing ovation at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Navarro arrived at the convention just hours after he was released from a federal prison in Miami for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the January 6 Committee, which was formed in violation of House rules. Navarro — much like former Trump Chief Advisor Steve Bannon — cited executive privilege when refusing to comply with the subpoena.

For this, he was held in contempt of Congress and ultimately sentenced to prison by an Obama-appointed federal judge.

On Wednesday, Navarro was released from prison after serving a four-month sentence. He immediately traveled to Milwaukee and delivered his first public speaking event in a primetime slot at the Republican National Convention.

The trusted Trump advisor arrived on stage to a standing ovation that lasted for nearly a minute, while members of the RNC crowd chanted “fight, fight, fight” in reference to former President Trump’s iconic response to being shot at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania this past Saturday.

After joking that he picked up a new “MAGA tattoo” in prison, Navarro proceeded to deliver one of the most intense speeches of the convention.

“The legislative branch came for me first. Your favorite Democrat, Nancy Pelosi, executive privilege. What did I do? I refused. The J6 committee demanded that I break the law because they have no respect for it. I refused and a Democrat majority in the House then voted to hold me in contempt,” he said.

“All right, what happened next? The next jackboot to drop was the executive branch. Another one of your favorite Democrats, Democrat Attorney General Merrick Garland. There’s a winner. Jack Smith indicted and prosecuted me for criminal contempt of Congress,” he continued before noting that prominent Democrats like Garland and former Attorney General Eric Holder were never jailed despite also being held in contempt of Congress.

“This morning, I did walk out out of a federal prison in Miami. Joe Biden and his Department of Injustice put me there. Tonight I’m here with you in this beautiful city of Milwaukee. I’ve got a very simple message for you,” Navarro told the crowd.

“If they can come for me, if they can come for Donald Trump, be careful, they will come for you.”

Peter Navarro, the onetime advisor to former President Donald Trump who defied Congress during its investigation into the January 6th, 2021 riots at the Capitol, is officially a free man.

CBS News reported that Navarro was quietly released from federal prison on Wednesday after serving a four-month sentence for defying a subpoena seeking his testimony about Trump’s knowledge and whereabouts on the historic day when hundreds of rioters stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to prevent certification of the 2020 election. Navarro, 75, served his sentence at an institution in Miami here he was assigned to an 80-member compound reserved for older inmates. Staff for the advisor posted on his social media page that he was about to be released, writing “the best it yet to come.”

With President Trump now officially the GOP nominee, Navarro, his former Director of Trade and Industrial Policy, may once again take a central role in his campaign to return to the White House. The outlet reported that he had been offered a prime speaking slot at this week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, though it’s unclear if he will take the stage and stump for the former boss he gave up his freedom to protect. The convention will hold its final events on Thursday.

In September of 2023, Navarro was found guilty of two counts of criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a House select committee chaired by then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) which has since become a lightning rod in the debate over whether the investigation was politicized. Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) refused to participate in the proceedings after several colleagues he recommended for positions on the committee were denied by Pelosi, who instead appointed anti-Trump members Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Liz Cheney (R-WY), both of whom declined to run for reelection or lost their Republican primary, respectively.

In addition to his four-month sentence, Navarro was handed $9,500 in fines by a federal judge. Despite appealing the ruling, Navarro was ordered to begin serving his sentence. The former Trump advisor argued he was bound by executive privilege, an argument Judge Amit Mehta refused to entertain. A three-judge appeals court refused to delay his sentencing and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts declined as well, with the full court denying a review of the case just weeks later.

The fallout from J6 continues more than three and a half years later. This month former Trump advisor Steve Bannon reported to federal prison to serve an equal four-month sentence on similar charges despite attempts by House Republicans to stymie his guilty verdict. Bannon is also pursuing an appeal of his conviction on two counts of contempt of Congress.

The January 6 committee — which hired a Hollywood producer to spice up its primetime hearings — telegraphed numerous bits of misinformation to the American people. In one instance, the committee aired testimony from former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson, who claimed that Trump attempted to grab the steering wheel of a secret service vehicle and drive back to the Capitol when the protests devolved into a riot. This claim has been thoroughly debunked by Secret Service agents.

The committee also cherry-picked video footage and failed to mention that police caused the riot by firing crowd control munitions at peaceful protesters. This footage, along with 14,000 additional hours, were hidden from the American people in favor of cherry-picked clips.

For refusing to cooperate with the sham committee, Navarro was charged with contempt of Congress and ultimately sentenced to four months in federal prison by an Obama-appointed federal judge.

Notable Democrats who have been held in contempt of Congress — such as former Attorney General Eric Holder and current Attorney General Merrick Garland — have never even faced criminal charges for the same conduct, much less prison time.

House Republicans, led by Congressman Eric Burlison (R-MO), have introduced a resolution aimed at rescinding subpoenas and contempt of Congress charges against key figures like Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro. The maneuver seeks not only to clear their legal hurdles but also to challenge the foundation of the controversial January 6 committee.

The resolution, backed by 24 Republican lawmakers, calls for an immediate withdrawal of the subpoenas issued by what Burlison and his supporters described as an “illegitimate January 6th Committee.” The group of Republicans characterized the committee as a partisan tool aimed at undermining former President Donald Trump and his closest advisors. They say that the committee’s actions were not just overreaching but fundamentally flawed in their legal basis and execution.

Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) explained, “The Republican House should, by an official vote of the House, declare the subpoenas on Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro to be illegitimate and repealed.”

This sentiment was echoed by Representative Bob Good (R-VA) who wrote, “The Democrats’ attempts to hold patriots such as Steve Bannon and Mark Meadows in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with an illegitimate committee are textbook examples of our government being weaponized against political enemies. These men have bravely fought for America-first values and against the Swamp.”

Critics of the January 6th Committee have long argued that its composition and procedures were not in accordance with established congressional norms. They claim that the committee was unbalanced, lacking equal representation from both major political parties, and say it focused more on dramatic public hearings than on thorough legal procedures.

“The committee’s own rules required equal apportionment between Republican and Democratic members, as well as the appointment of 13 members, but Nancy Pelosi refused to allow it,” claimed Representative Andy Ogles (R-TN).
