Amid the fallout from his high-profile corruption trial, Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) has announced his resignation from the U.S. Senate, effective August 20. The decision comes after his conviction on July 16 for accepting an array of bribes, including cash, gold bars, and a luxury vehicle, in exchange for political favors.

Menendez, a long-serving Democratic lawmaker, was found guilty of using his influence to assist three business executives with securing deals with foreign officials and interfering in criminal investigations within New Jersey. His departure from the Senate was confirmed after his resignation letter was read during a session at 3 p.m. today, ending a chapter marred by scandal and legal battles.

“While I fully intend to appeal the jury’s verdict, all the way and including to the Supreme Court, I do not want the Senate to be involved in a lengthy process that will detract from its important work,” Menendez wrote in his letter announcing his resignation according to The Washington Post.

Rep. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) has been named the Democratic nominee for the 2024 Senate race to fill the seat soon to be vacated by Menendez. With the Senate scheduled for a recess from August 5 through September 6, Governor Phil Murphy (D-N.J.) has a window until early September to appoint a temporary successor.

The appointee would serve in the Senate for approximately four months. The period leading up to Menendez’s resignation on August 20 may allow him the opportunity to deliver a farewell speech on the Senate floor and continue his legislative duties, including voting on bills and nominations, until his official departure.

Menendez, a long-serving New Jersey Democrat, faced a multitude of serious allegations brought by federal prosecutors in New York. He was found guilty on all counts. Federal prosecutors had accused him of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of bribes — including cash, gold bars, and mortgage payments — in return for leveraging his political influence.

The recipients of his favors included three New Jersey businessmen and the governments of Egypt and Qatar. Despite his pleas of not guilty on the 16 federal charges, the jury’s decision was unanimous. Agents found numerous envelopes filled with cash, bags brimming with bills, and even cash hidden in the senator’s jackets and boots. Additionally, they seized gold bars valued at thousands of dollars from his wife’s closet.

Many of Menendez’s colleagues in the Senate had previously urged him to resign months ago. “He must stand up now and leave the Senate,” said Rep. Cory Booker (D-N.J.). “He must do that. And if he refuses to do that, I will lead that effort to make sure that he’s removed from the Senate. It is the just thing to do.”

“In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said.

The scandal first came to light when federal prosecutors presented evidence suggesting that Menendez had stored the gold bars in a safe deposit box, a detail that became a focal point in the allegations against him. This case adds to the prior legal challenges faced by Menendez, who was previously indicted in 2015 for different corruption charges, although those charges were eventually dismissed after a mistrial.

In a dramatic account delivered to jurors last week, federal prosecutor Paul M. Monteleoni detailed the extensive evidence discovered during an FBI raid on the New Jersey residence of Menendez. According to Monteleoni, agents found numerous envelopes filled with cash, bags brimming with bills, and even cash hidden in the senator’s jackets and boots. Additionally, they seized gold bars valued at thousands of dollars from his wife’s closet.

Monteleoni explained that these valuables were bribes from two businessmen seeking favors from Menendez, who had previously chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “It wasn’t enough for him to be one of the most powerful people in Washington,” Monteleoni told the jury according to The New York Times. “It wasn’t enough for him to be entrusted by the public with the power to approve billions of dollars of U.S. military aid to foreign countries.”

“No, Robert Menendez wanted all that power,” he continued. “But he also wanted to use it to pile up riches for himself and his wife. So, Menendez sold the power of his office.”

Senator Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine Menendez depart Manhattan Federal court in New York after arraignment on new charges in bribery case on March 11, 2024

Defense attorney Adam Fee sharply criticized the government’s allegations against Menendez, dismissing them as “cherry-picked nonsense” and accusing prosecutors of “fudging” the facts according to ABC News. “The only honest verdict I submit here is to acquit him on each count,” Fee said to the jury on July 9, claiming, “His actions were lawful, normal and good for the country.”

Menendez chose not to take the stand in his own defense. After the defense concluded its arguments on July 3, Menendez spoke briefly to the media, stating, “From my perspective, the government has failed to prove every aspect of its case.”

Accusations first suggested that Menendez accepted gold bars and other forms of cash from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for various political favors. The businessmen implicated in the case were involved in sectors that would benefit from federal influence, including Medicare. Menendez used his influence to interfere in federal investigations, advocate for business interests in Egypt, and manipulate visa applications.
