ABC News anchor Linsey Davis — who is set to serve as a moderator for next month’s presidential debate between Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump — linked Trump to the KKK during a segment at the Democratic National Convention on Monday.

The comments came when Davis was interviewing Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a co-chair of the Harris-Walz Campaign.

“As you know, former President Donald Trump is expected to go campaign in Howell, Michigan, tomorrow. Many people are aware that a month ago, in Howell, KKK protesters marched in the streets with the white robes on and suggested that they support Donald Trump,” Davis said. “I’m curious if you make anything about that connection and him going in particularly to Howell tomorrow.”

Whitmer wasted no time in jumping at the opportunity to link Trump with the KKK, calling it a “troubling strategy that we see from the other side to divide us and to scare us and to stoke fear and anger.”

Davis was far from the only reporter to make the bizarre comparison, as a reporter asked the former president for comment on Tuesday. As Trump was turning to exit the room, he once again returned to the podium and asked, “who was here in 2021?”

The reporter then responded with “Joe Biden,” at which point Trump said “thank you very much everybody,” before exiting.

Davis’ linking of the former president to the KKK comes as the network is facing allegations of bias due to the relationship between Harris and a high-ranking Disney executive who oversees ABC News.

Dana Walden currently serves as co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, through which she oversees a number of the company’s television endeavors, including ABC News and ABC Entertainment. In recent years, she has made a number of donations to Kamala Harris’ various political campaigns, according to a report from the New York Times.

Walden first met Harris in 1994, while their husbands, Matt Walden and Doug Emhoff, have known each other since the 1980’s. Harris has described the ABC News director and her husband as “extraordinary friends” in the past.

The Waldens have donated to every single one of Harris’ political campaigns, dating back to her first run for San Francisco District Attorney.

A popular Southern Democrat has decided he wants no part in the Harris presidential campaign, recently telling allies that he would not consider joining her ticket if asked.

The opposite sentiment has been par for the course among Democrats eager to fill her No. 2 place since President Joe Biden announced the end of his reelection bid last week. Now with Vice President Kamala Harris set to face down former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), the chattering class’s latest parlor guessing game is about who would most help the embattled veep out with climbing back to even in the polls. To that end, observers can count North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper out of the race, according to the Western Journal.

Cooper, 67 has won plaudits at the local level for his ability to win votes in a red state lost by President Biden four years ago, and he has been winning elections since joining the state legislature at the age of 29 in 1986, WRAL reported. Earlier this month he told reporters that he fully stood behind Harris. “Kamala Harris should be the next president,” Cooper wrote on social media. “I’ve known [Harris] going back to our days as AGs, and she has what it takes to defeat Donald Trump and lead our country thoughtfully and with integrity. I look forward to campaigning for her as we work to win NC up and down the ticket.”

That enthusiasm, however, doesn’t mean he wants to deal with the inescapable rough-and-tumble of national politics. “This just wasn’t the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket,” Cooper posted to X Monday. “As I’ve said from the beginning, [Harris] has an outstanding list of people from which to choose, and we’ll all work to make sure she wins.”

Others who remain rumored to be on the veep’s shortlist include Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Strategists with Harris have previously outlined how her path to victory will likely be through the southern states, comprised of higher populations of minority voters, rather than Democrats’ more reliable “Blue Wall” of midwestern and Rust Belt states. Recent polling shows the Democrat trailing Trump more narrowly than Biden, but to break even she will in all likelihood need to dampen Black enthusiasm for Trump, which is at the highest level for a Republican presidential candidate since the Civil Rights era.

In a sign that the midwest is falling out of favor with the Harris camp, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer confirmed she is “not a part of the vetting” process, telling CBS News that she stands behind her party’s candidate but will be watching from the sidelines. “I have communicated with everyone, including the people of Michigan, that I’m going to stay as governor until the end of my term at the end of 2026,” Whitmer said.

The Democratic National Convention is set to take place in Chicago on August 19th, and the Harris campaign has said it intends to announce her running mate shortly.

Anchor John Berman fact-checked Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s claim that former President Donald Trump supports a national abortion ban in a rare moment of cross-ideological clarity on CNN. During an interview marking the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Whitmer accused Trump of paving the way for stringent national restrictions on abortion. However, her claims did not go unchallenged.

“He [Trump] appointed three justices to the Supreme Court who went into Congress and lied,” Governor Whitmer (D-MI) said. “They said that Roe was the settled law of the land. They betrayed that oath that they took when they went into office. And we would not be in this moment but for Donald Trump.”

“He’s the one that put these justices on the court. Regardless of the 18 different positions he’s taken over the years, he is absolutely front and center on the road to an all-out national abortion ban. And that’s why we’ve got to get Joe Biden elected this fall.”

Berman, in a move uncharacteristic of the often criticized left-leaning network, pointed out the inconsistency in Whitmer’s portrayal of Trump’s stance. “He says he’s not on the road to an all-out federal abortion ban because he said he wants to leave it up to the states,” Berman explained.

Whitmer has been a prominent figure in the Left’s campaign to capitalize on political gains over the past two years. She has consistently claimed that Trump is orchestrating a nationwide abortion ban as she campaigns on behalf of Joe Biden.

“It’s really important to remind people that if Donald Trump gets a second term in the White House he has already committed to signing a national abortion ban,” Whitmer said in Milwaukee last week, according to The Midwesterner. “Biden is the only person on the ballot who would win the White House and will protect these fundamental rights.”

In April, Trump released a video statement on his position on the issue of abortion for the 2024 presidential election. Trump said, he will leave it “up to the states to do the right thing” if elected again, painting Democrats as “radical” on the issue.

“The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land,” Trump explained. “Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks, or some will [be] more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people.”

Abortion has been a double-edged sword for Republicans, galvanizing pro-life activists for decades and culminating in the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade. Since then, Trump has criticized other Republicans for speaking “inaccurately” about the issue while costing the GOP winnable races in conservative strongholds like Kansas and Ohio. He asked voters to “follow their heart” on the issue and reminded them of the important stakes of expanding or restricting abortion in their respective states.

“You must also win elections to restore our culture and, in fact, to save our country, which is currently and very sadly a nation in decline,” Trump said.
