During Wednesday’s congressional hearing, FBI Director Christopher Wray unveiled new evidence concerning Thomas Crooks, the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Wray detailed how recent investigations into digital devices linked to the suspect shed light on his intentions days before the event.

“Analysis of a laptop that the investigation ties to the shooter reveals that on July 6th, he did a Google search for, quote: ‘how far away was Oswald from Kennedy?’” Wray disclosed.

“So that’s a search that obviously is significant in terms of his state of mind,” Wray continued, noting the calculated nature of the preparations. “That is the same day that it appears that he registered for the Butler rally.”

The search implies not only a chilling premeditation but also a sinister appreciation of historical presidential assassinations as a blueprint for action. Oswald, who assassinated President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, was approximately 88 yards (about 265 feet) away from the president when he fired the shots from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, Texas.

Wray’s testimony before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee followed former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who announced she would depart her post after overseeing the worst security failure in decades. Lawmakers led by Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) first grilled the Bureau director about a drone that was recovered after it was used by the gunman to assess the perimeter of the Trump rally on July 13.

Wray confirmed the device was located in the car of 20-year-old Thomas Crooks along with explosive devices rigged to blow in what authorities believe was an attempt to distract from his firing position on a nearby roof. “We have recovered a drone that the shooter appears to have used,” said Wray.

“It’s being exploited and analyzed by the FBI lab. The drone was recovered in his vehicle, so at the time of his shooting the drone was in his vehicle with the controller.” When asked by Jordan what time the drone was last flown, Wray made a shocking announcement that indicated another security lapse by the Secret Service.

“It appears that around 3:50 p.m., 4 o’clock in that window on the day of the shooting that the shooter was flying the drone around the area… Not over the stage and that part of the area itself, but I would say about 200 yards, give or take, away. We think, but we do not know,” he added, “that he was live streaming the view, the footage for around 11 minutes.”

Congressman Dan Bishop (R-NC) was tougher when he asked Wray “why the FBI doesn’t disclose all of the investigative detail that you are gathering as it is gathered.”

“We have tried to be transparent with Congress and with the American people as we are going along in the investigation, frankly unusually so given the sheer nature of it. We have provided a lot of information… in response to your questions and your colleagues,” Wray retorted, explaining how “facts change” over the course of investigations. “Part of our goal is not just to respect the ongoing investigation process but also to make sure that we don’t prematurely provide information that then two days later turns out to be different from what we told people.”

Investigators revealed that Crooks had scouted the rally location twice before the incident and found images of both Trump and President Joe Biden on his phone. The source, who asks not to be named, said the FBI’s Operational Technology Division in Quantico, Va., made the discovery when it finally gained access to the contents of 20-year-old Crooks’ encrypted Samsung phone. Initial attempts at the Pittsburgh field office to crack open the Android failed and the device was flown to Quantico on an FBI plane.

The only other recent activity on the phone which the FBI discovered were texts from his parents asking where he was. The source says the parents thought their son had taken the AR-style rifle and gone to the shooting range where he sometimes practiced.

The FBI recovered Crooks’ phone from his body, along with four rifle magazines and a remote control capable of detonating the explosives found in his car. He was on the roof (top) when he fired at Trump, who was on the red carpet covering the stage.

“By 6 pm he was dead,” the source said.

According to the source, the FBI has largely completed its examination of the phone’s contents and is now at work on the gunman’s laptop and a number of hard drives which were recovered from his bedroom.

According to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation, the phone was also found to contain an array of photos of politicians. This included Democrats’ House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), alongside others like Rudy Giuliani.

The sources, who provided details to CNN, indicated that the majority of these images seem to have been sourced from the internet, and there were no accompanying threats or ominous messages linked to these figures. Further investigations into the shooter’s phone revealed searches stretching back to spring, meticulously tracking the dates and locations of Trump rallies and gathering information on major political conventions.
