Although gaslighting is a term we should probably retire for overuse, it’s worth keeping in mind as we look at the 2020–21 school-reopening timeline we are being asked to magically revise in 2024, with an eye toward what, if anything, Harris had to do with it.

Biden promised during the 2020 campaign to get schools open once it was safe. That December, after he’d won the election but before taking office, Biden further vowed to reopen schools within the first 100 days. That pledge raised concerns with teachers, who did not want to go back to the classroom unless they received certain assurances.

The critique went deeper, questioning the overall handling of the pandemic by both political parties but focusing particularly on the Democrats’ narrative around school reopening. Rommelmann suggested that the administration’s claims about Harris’s pivotal role are more about political convenience than factual accuracy. “America still hasn’t reckoned with its pandemic failures, and that’s true well beyond school closures,” she asserted. The first night of the DNC drew an average of 20.3 million viewers Monday, ranking slightly higher than the opening night of the Republican National Convention, which took place just days after former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated.

Monday night’s coverage also served as President Biden’s farewell address to the party after he announced he would be suspending his re-election campaign, giving the first night an added draw over the RNC.

Nielson ratings account for coverage from ABC (2.8 million), CBS (2 million), NBC (1.8 million), Scripps News, Univision, CNN (3.2 million), CNNe, Fox Business, Fox News Channel (2.4 million), MSNBC (4.6 million), Newsmax, NewsNation, and PBS. The numbers account for viewers tuning in between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Central Time.

The numbers are likely higher for both conventions, as Nielson ratings do not factor in significant numbers of online and live-streaming viewers.

Mondays numbers were up slightly from 2020, when 19.75 million viewers tuned in. Ratings remain down significantly when compared with 2016, however, which drew 25.95 million viewers.

The DNC will almost certainly draw its highest number of viewers on Thursday night, when Vice President Harris will cap off the convention and accept the party nomination for president in her primetime address. Minnesota Governor and Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz is set to address the Chicago crowd on Wednesday, while former President Barack Obama headlined night two.

It remains to be seen whether Harris’ address will outdraw former President Trump’s RNC address last month, which drew a peak of 28.4 million viewers. In 2020, 24.6 million opted to watch the final night of the DNC, when Joe Biden delivered his speech.

Law enforcement and city officials in Chicago are constructing a sprawling makeshift barrier around the Democratic National Convention venue in anticipation of massive pro-Palestine protests.

Pro-Palestine protests have remained a constant across the United States since the October 7 attacks on Israel and subsequent war in Gaza. Protesters have held several national rallies in Washington D.C., at times breaching White House gates. Protesters have also clashed with Capitol Police on multiple occasions, including one instance where protesters attempted to gain access to the Democratic National Committee buildings.

Protesters have also consistently turned up at President Biden’s events and speeches. While “genocide Joe” has received a significant amount of flak from pro-Palestine protesters — who enjoy widespread support among the party’s progressive wing — Kamala Harris has not escaped their ire. Hecklers have also crashed Kamala Harris’ speaking events, where they have accused her of supporting genocide. She was most recently interrupted while speaking at a campaign event in Michigan, leading to a rebuke from a visibly annoyed Harris.

The demonstrations are expected to continue throughout this week’s Democratic National Convention, as thousands of activists are expected to descend on Chicago from around the country. The first protest is planned for Sunday evening, while demonstrations are expected  to continue throughout the week.

In addition to pro-Palestine demonstrators, DNC and Chicago leaders are bracing for protests from other left-wing groups, including some who believe the party does not go far enough on abortion.

In a statement to the Associated Press, organizer Linda Loew said even though Democrats have, “pushed to safeguard reproductive rights at home, the issue is international.” Protesters intend to march for access to “abortion care” across the world, while also calling on the U.S. to disengage from foreign wars in favor of redirecting funds to “reproductive care.”

“We believe that the billions of dollars that continue to flow to the state of Israel and the flow of weapons are having an inordinate and horrific impact, but in particular on women, children and the unborn,” she said. “All of these things are tied together.”

Organizers are expecting upwards of 20,000 activists and students to participate in the demonstrations.

As a result, Chicago officials have been constructing a sprawling makeshift barrier outside the convention venue. The city has allowed protests less than one mile from the United Center after a federal judge axed plans to keep them farther away.

Coalition to March on the DNC spokesman Hatem Abudayyeh said the group is pleased it won the right to protest closer to the convention, though he still voiced concerns over safety and would prefer a longer route. The group will be bussing in protesters from at least two-dozen states.

Vice President Harris has formally initiated the vetting process for potential running mates, as the campaign has reportedly sent vetting materials to a number of candidates. One candidate — a governor of a red state who was initially thought to be on the vice president’s list — has notably not received any vetting paperwork.

The Harris campaign has sent vetting materials to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

Notably absent from the list was Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who recently cruised to re-election in an overwhelmingly pro-Trump state. Beshear is also one of the few candidates who have expressed interest in serving as Harris’ running mate.

Cooper offered a similar answer, telling the outlet that the focus should remain on Harris this week when asked the same question.

Days after a harrowing assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a political rally, chilling new details have emerged about the suspect, Thomas Matthew Crooks. Investigators revealed that Crooks had scouted the rally location twice before the incident and found images of both Trump and President Joe Biden on his phone. The motive behind the attack remains shrouded in mystery.

Authorities are probing Crooks’ digital footprint, which included marked dates for the Democratic National Convention and various Trump events. However, the implications of these searches are still unclear, according to U.S. officials.

Just before the shooting, Crooks’ last online search was for pornography. This was discovered when the FBI managed to break into the 20-year-old’s encrypted Samsung phone, a senior law enforcement official disclosed to The Daily Beast.

Previous attempts to access the Android device at the Pittsburgh field office were unsuccessful, prompting a transfer of the phone to Quantico for further examination by agents. The only other recent activity detected on the phone were texts from Crooks’ parents inquiring about his whereabouts.

The last search Thomas Crooks made on his cell phone before attempting to assassinate Donald Trump was for pornography, a senior law enforcement source tells the Daily Beast.

The source, who asks not to be named, said the FBI’s Operational Technology Division in Quantico, Va., made the discovery when it finally gained access to the contents of 20-year-old Crooks’ encrypted Samsung phone. Initial attempts at the Pittsburgh field office to crack open the Android failed and the device was flown to Quantico on an FBI plane.

The only other recent activity on the phone which the FBI discovered were texts from his parents asking where he was. The source says the parents thought their son had taken the AR-style rifle and gone to the shooting range where he sometimes practiced.

The FBI recovered Crooks’ phone from his body, along with four rifle magazines and a remote control capable of detonating the explosives found in his car. He was on the roof (top) when he fired at Trump, who was on the red carpet covering the stage.

“By 6 pm he was dead,” the source said.

According to the source, the FBI has largely completed its examination of the phone’s contents and is now at work on the gunman’s laptop and a number of hard drives which were recovered from his bedroom.

According to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation, the phone was also found to contain an array of photos of politicians. This included Democrats’ House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), alongside others like Rudy Giuliani.

The sources, who provided details to CNN, indicated that the majority of these images seem to have been sourced from the internet, and there were no accompanying threats or ominous messages linked to these figures. Further investigations into the shooter’s phone revealed searches stretching back to spring, meticulously tracking the dates and locations of Trump rallies and gathering information on major political conventions.
